Just posting a list of our favourite military quotations, here are the starters
from Wolfgir and myself. I have also posted the "Murphy's rules of combat" somewhere in the BG2 forum last week, so I won't bother to repeat them here

"Damn the torpedoes"
"I see no ships"
"Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton"
"One more step and we shall have victory"
"A mounted soldier is always superior to a foot soldier"
"if you meet mounted soldiers, run to the woods and destroy them utterly if they are stupid enough to follow"
"My left flank is crumbling, my right flank is destroyed, main force has lost 50 %, situation perfect, I am attacing."

I remembered hearing this from a friend who assures me that the Royal Marine in question was a friend of his, so its an urban myth then,

Situation: A Royal Marine is on exchange with the US Marines
(reverse the situation if you like it really makes no difference)

USM: When we carry out an assault we expect to lose about 20% strength, what ratio do you guys work with?
RM: Well if we can help it, we try not to lose anybody.

"Jolly nice of you, old man, but we must refuse your offer. Terribly sorry but we simply haven't the room for all of you." - attributed to British para officer in Arnhem during Operation Market Garden

the southern army commander:" HAH! deadly? they cannot even shoot an elephant from this distance..."

he never got a chance to finish it
