Any chance of providing a link Yorick? It'd be intresting to read where this slur occured and in what context it was used in.

BTW, AFAIK, the original "Hail" was a roman title of respect - Hail Caeser I believe, if I'm not mistaken.

Insults like fascist, commy, Paki, {insulting expression for people of African origin}, {inappropriate description for Native Americans}, {inapp. desc. for Israelis}, ... are sometimes that strong that they can make people cry (people ho are for certain reasons rather sensitive to that kind of language) or burst into rage. Especially in public forums you never know who listens and therefore who you might hurt with your wording which was of no evil intent whatsoever. I wouldn't mind my friends calling me a Paki (not that they would as we are speaking German), because I know their intent and as I'm not very much connected to my father's country, where I didn't even grow up. Yet I know people who get easily upset on this or on similar insults.
It's like emptying a 9mm into the blue. Not aiming does not mean you can't hit.

P.S.: worked around some ugly words with {} to make use of my own point
its been my personal experience that words are infact nothing at all like swords as you put it. you allways have the choice to be offended by a word or not be offended. if some one reads something and they choose to be offended by it then its not the word that is to blame but the person who wrote it and maybe the person reading it. and my point was that every one pulling out there dictionarys and what not to define the word...just seams silly to me.

for example,

scenerio 1:
Harry and Potter are chatting on a forum one day. they have been arguing over chacolate pie or something. harry gets angry with potter. so harry calls potter a (insert bad word here) does potter;
a. write back with another insulting comment
b. forget about the whole thing and go drink a cool refreshing fruit drink
c. go into a rage and smash everything in sight
d. look up the word in the dictonary in the hopes of proving harry wrong

all are understandable things to do....except d....because if potter proves harry wrong it still doesnt change the way harry views potter, how he judges potter, or how he feels about potter...all it proves is that harry didnt look up the word befor writing it...

scenerio 2:
bob and dylan are having a good time laughing about some vidio clip they saw and posting there momments on a forum. dylan post a remark that reads as fallows, "those crazy (insert bad word here)" then a third person reads this, we'll call this third person robbie williams. robbie williams is highly offended by this remark because he believes it to be offensive to him for some reson.

seams to me that if anyone or thing is to be blamed for robbie williams being offended then it should be dylan and maybe robbie williams himself for letting this word offend him(can depend). but not the words definition itself...I think that maybe dylan and robbie williams should sit down together over a cool refreashing fruit drink and figure things out with any senseless bickering.

senerio 3:
nutella calls the madhatter a goovy dude. the madhatter is offended by this remark

well I think maybe the madhatter is a morron and should probly stop dinking so many cool refreshing fruit drinks because being called a groovy dude is not a bad thing.

um seeing how I am far to lazy and simply dying for a cool refreshing fruit drink. I am not going to proofread my post. I am just going to post this and hope I didnt make to many mistakes and hope I actually get my point across. thank you and cheers

And here's an idea:

How about we avoid namecalling altogether? Hmmm? Resorting to tossing out names at someone is hardly the way to further a point. In most cases it reduces a debate/argument to slinging mud, defensive posturing and flaming one another.

I've never seen a thread where one member called another member a derogatory name come to a good end. As much as some people like to think it won't matter, it usually does. If not the person being 'labeled' then someone else in the conversation will be offended or hurt.

It's all well and good to debate the meanings of words and I'll let that stand as it's a good exercise in communication. BUT no matter how much you debate it here or anywhere else, namecalling is still a no-no on IW so there's really no justification that makes it 'right'.

In my personal opinion- it's something most of us do in sheer frustration with a discussion and if we're that wound up about it, it's time to take a deep breath and leave the thread. Calling Billy a 'poopyhead' doesn't make you right. And even if you are right, it sure doesn't make you look very good to the spectators. Kind of a lose-lose proposition in my book.

Debate the meaning of fascist as much as you like, but keep this civil and if you are losing your cool- take a break, please. Try and keep us mods from having to intervene, ok?

See the "Bush is a Fascist" remark, above. That is abuse, pure and simple, as he is not by either of Webster's definitions. That is the slippery slope that I am trying to avoid.

I am not saying that words like sword (or guns) kill people.
People kill people. I agree with that. But a sword is a dangerous tool so if someone cannot handle it right he should stay away from it. And if a forum or a society discovers that (s)words are in general misused to cause a significant number of members pain they should start thinking about banning them.

I not talking about people being offended by insults like groovy dude (or other more evil remarks ).
I am talking about words that have a negative history that live to up until now.
If someone for example has parents/grandparents who were killed/tortured in WWII they may NOT have a choice of how to react.

Imagine:

Peter's grandfather was freed from a concentration camp in the last weeks of war where he had been staying for 3 years before that. Every time someone mentions terms who remind him of that time he breaks down in tears. Peter - as most people - likes/loves his grandpa. Therefore when he sees him suffer he suffers himself.
Someday Peter visits a public place/forum and gets into an argument with someone who ultimately calls him a fascist/nazi.
Now Peter accused (in what manner whatsoever) of being one of these guys who causes his grandpa pain to an extent that Peter can still feel it when his grandpa just tells is understandably upset. He has not so much as a choice to say "I'll just take it cool, what does he know anyway."

Words like fascist, nazi, commie, ... for the culprits
or ■■■■■■, paki, Jud, ... for the victims
are strung to stories so full of grievance that it takes some people superhuman strenght to cope with them. So why don't freeze these words in your active vocabulary. It's not a big deal for you, but it might be a big deal for the people who can't cope.
