Computer woes
I thought that now they've started sharing Command and Conquer Gold for free, I might as well try it. I tried to install it, following the XP install instructions, using Win95 compatibility mode where applicable, carefully not installing DirectX 3, and clicked on the Reboot Now button when it showed up. And windows didn't boot back up. The splash screen shows up, and then the computer just shuts down.
I've had similar symptoms with a blocked CPU fan, a burnt motherboard and a dying HD, but I doubt it's any of those, as Ubuntu still works fine, and this correlated so closely with the attempted C&C install. Using a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pa 1538 laptop, running Windows XP Home Edition, attempted to install C&C from the Nod disc. Can anyone help?

Re: Computer woes
So you're saying your computer won't boot at all now?

Re: Computer woes
Does it boot into safe mode?
(press and hold F5 when booting)

Re: Computer woes
The computer boots. I can run Linux just fine. Windows won't boot.
When I try to boot it, Windows gives me the black screen with white text on it that states that something has gone horribly wrong and asking whether I want to boot in safe mode. Normal boot gives me a splash screen followed by an unexplained shutdown. Safe mode gives me another black screen with white text followed by an unexplained shutdown.

Re: Computer woes
Hmm...one solution is to plug the hard drive into another computer and run chkdsk on it (which will automatically run on startup if there are issues).
That may repair things enough to start in safe mode....

Re: Computer woes
It's a laptop; removing any parts is difficult and putting them back in is even more difficult. It might even void the warranty, I'm not exactly sure.
So, plugging the hard drive on another computer is complicated. Any other way I can accomplish that?

Re: Computer woes
Well, removing your hard drive probably won't void your warranty, but unless it's a newer laptop, it probably would require a converter (I broke down a purchased one, so that I can make convenient backup images of my laptop HDD to my desktop...makes monumental changes very easy)
Another solution is repairing your OS via the install disk.

Re: Computer woes
Press F8 during boot and select "Use last known good configuration"
It's a long shot, but it has saved my ass a few times

Re: Computer woes
It does sound as if something in Windows corrupted, rather than a hardware failure. I'd say try to do a repair from the initial installation disk, and if that doesn't work, a full reinstall. Best of luck, man--I feel for you!

Re: Computer woes
Repair install was an unprecedented success. I didn't even have to reinstall Grub. Except that whenever I try to reinstall DAEMON tools, it stops working again.
