So what do you think is better for a fighter? Weapon and shield, or double weapon?

if it's for a fighter, then definitely go with the shield. the only reason i can think of to ever use 2 weapons (for a fighter) is to take advantage of both of their abilities (i.e. crom + fury = brutal goodness). the measly extra attack you gain is just not worth giving up a potential 5 points in armor class, otherwise.

for non-fighters, especially thieves, two weapons is a little better as they don't get the extra attacks fighters do as the gain levels, and thieves rarely get much benefit from bucklers (and their typically high dex means they've prolly got a bow/xbow equipped anyway).

i like to have my front 2 chars with shields as they attract most of the attention, then bring in my 2-handed sword wielder and dual-weapon wielder in the fight just after them. works out quite well.

Heh....more like 4X deja vu (but it all depends on your perspective)!

Personally, for a fighter I prefer dual wield, and like the above, the ideal choice is Celestial Fury and Crom Faeyr, although I would keep the Daystar in the same hand as Celestial Fury (i.e. Crom Faeyr in off hand) should undeads decides to get a bit too close to me.

I have my main character (he's a fighter) with two proficiency points in the Basterd sward and a point in double weapon combat, and two basterb swards +1 equipped and he is a force to be reckoned with!!!

Depends on what you like i guess.

My Paladin of course doesn't use a shield, just his Avenger sword.
I would use a sword/shield combo on your formost fighter, the lower AC will let him take the brunt of the attacks without alot of damage
As a 2ndary backup fighter, your 2 weapon fighter will rock if he enters combat directly behind the main fighter, the main fighter with the shield takes the first attacks, and your harder hitting backup fighter with 2 weapon jumps in a second later to slaughter the foes.
Getting Grandmaster in a weapon, and using 2 of them in combat will really lay the foes low quick.
