Then you don't have to grab any team mates. You can choose to solo alone, or use a party, but it's best to have a group with you for the harder quests. If it's just traveling from city to city that's a different story.

we fought off some large groupes of monsters, it was a rumble and a full on battle like nothing I have ever seen on a video game. Then when we got to the next city we all went our seperate ways.

They are for everyone. The level cap doesn't mean anything like it does in most RPG games. Everybody can only have 8 skills in use at a time. The higher your level the more skills you will have learned and out of all those skills you must choose only 8 skills to use each time before you leave a city, town, or fort. That means that no mater what level you are you only have 8 skill at the ready at all times. But, the higher your level is will make the recovery speed of your skills faster and you will be able to use them longer.
All skills have some kind of timed useage for example Fire Arrows of the archer, the skill is stated something like the following: FIRE ARROW= for the next 40 seconds your arrows will have 4X power and cause 10 points extra fire damage after the 40 seconds it will be 35 seconds before you may use this skill again. During the 40 seconds that your skill is active you may get off 25 or 30 fire arrows. Each skill is reuseable over and over again but, at low levels the recovery time is about 30 to 60 seconds. Then when you are closer to the level cap the recovery times are 10 to 30 seconds. If you are a Mage it works the same way each spell is considered a skill and will take up one of your skill ports at the bottom of the screen where they are easy to access. You can cast a spell as many times as you have time to then durring the recharge perriod you'll have to use one of your other 7 spells that you have choisen to place in the skill ports. So far I have never been without a spell or weapon enhancement to use while waiting for the others to recharge. In this way everyone level 1 to 50 can go into any area with out worrying that they will meet some one with all 350 skills at the ready at the same time. In this way everybody is some what equil in that way you can have a team with a level 6 Paladin, a level 15 Mage, a level 1 Ranger, and a level 20 Cleric and go into any area with the knoledge that everybody has their 8 skills at the ready and can use them when they need them. There is no PvP in free areas or in Quest areas so you will never fight any other Player one on one. PvP is only in the Arenas and is always Team Guild fights only!!!
