depends on the question, if you're referring to gods an avatar is the physical manifestation of the deity, ie they take on a humanoid body(assuming they are a humanoid god) and travel the prime material plane (Faerun, Oerth, Athas, Krynn, etc) the deity can have a certain number of avatars actaive at any given time depending on how powerful the god is, greater gods can have up to 10 avatars at a time, requiring one day to reform one if it is destroyed, intermediate gods can have up to 5 avatars, requiring one week to replace a destroyed avatar, lesser gods can have only two avatars at a time, and need a full month to reconstruct a destroyed avatar, while demigods can only have one avatar at any given time and need a full year to replace one that has been destroyed. Avatars while by no means easyt to kill can be destroyed, much easier than the god itself, although doing so usually brings divine retribution down on whoever was responsible (or the entire area depending on how vengefull the god(dess) is.

Characters also have avatars (refering to their sprites).
In very general terms, and avatar is a representation of something.
