hey kaz, i threw out a little bait and waited for the first german to come along and take a nibble, and guess what.... it's you ! Of course you know i'm only joking, don't you ? Btw, bringin in the swiss and the austrians doesn't really count. I understand german pretty well but swiss and (some) austrian makes no sense to me at all. those are really weird accents. And speaking about numbers, we can bring in belgium, south africa and a couple of carribean islands where they all speak dutch, and in that case i'm not so sure if you still outnumber us. Your turn dude.

rofl - this discussion is getting a bit ridiculous. Well, Rikky, back 1200 years ago neither *our* language nor *your* language was anything near what it is today. Actually, I think that's even before the time German and French separated... right? So, let's not bring history into this, even a few hundred years ago the various languages were much different from what they are today.
Actually, I think we Germans can draw various African countries into this too... shall we call it a draw? (although I agree on the Swiss/Austrian part, you might lump Bavaria in there too )

EDIT: And before anybody starts arguing about accents, I'm from Göttingen, which - I do believe - belongs to that tiny, tiny part of Germany that speaks proper Hochdeutsch, not some dialect!

Wow!

Is this just a name thing or is it a debate about how far back languages go. Rrrrrgh. Ça m'enerve! I hate debates on languages!

Anyway, je m'appelle Daniel James Garry.

Call me paranoid, but only people I know pretty well on-line know my real first name. And I can name on one hand the number of most trusted on-line friends who know my full name.

BTW, Weisi, I know how to pronounce both of your names correctly. I studied Mandarin. You, too, Rik.

*hugs*
