I don't know what I'll do this year. Spend valentine with my gf or spend valentine with the girl whom my family wants me to marry. * sigh *

Is that a tiny violin I hear, playing in the background?

Aww Kakero, that doesn't sound like a fun choice at all. Hope you have a good weekend, despite that.

I don't do Valentine's day - it's just an excuse for card manufacturers and retailers to make some money. Most people in the UK would consider it very weird to send a valentine's card to family members, I think it's an extremely odd practice

There was a bloke I used to work with and became friends with who would send me a hand made card every year - unfortunately he drowned in a tragic accident about 18 months ago, so I will probably remember that on valentine's day and feel sad.

That History Channel article gave a very sanitised account of the Lupercalia you know - don't believe everything you see on TV/the internet!!!

LOL! I know, Epona! I just grabbed it for the quick overview.

That's so sad about losing your friend...I can see where the holiday would have bad associations for you from that.

So is it not very widely celebrated there? I mean you didn't grow up making valentine cards in grade school or getting candy hearts and stuff?

Some people do, but a lot don't bother with it. We don't tend to go all out for these things in the same way you do over there though (stiff upper lip and all that ) although it is increasingly being pushed on us by Clintons Cards LOL (as is Mothers' Day, Fathers' Day, First Cousin Twice Removeds' Day LOL)

I never recall it being an issue at school - some people sent cards, others didn't. But not to family members, that is a definite no-no here - that's a different kind of love - valentines day here is definitely not about loving your mum.

LOL! Over here I think they hyped it for couples at first, but there's a buck to be made in getting people to buy more cards/candy etc so your kids give them to their whole class in school and stuff like that.

Well, I'm going to make my sweetie her favorite dishes. My home-made ceaser salad, and sautied shrimp and scallops with a butter, garlic, basil sauce. I'm also going to give her a massage.
