Dune, Frank Herbert and everything else

Don't know whether this is the right place, because it says Ad&d and fantasy rpg books, but sf is fantasy at the end so I think no real problem.
Ok, what I wanna know from you is did you read Dune(all six original novels and the new house triology) what do you think of them, what do you like about them and especially your opinion about Frank Herbert's other works.
By the way, shame to you all to miss them, didn't find at least one thread on the whole board

Loved the original book, for me the second was slim pickings but thought the 3rd rounded out the trilogy fairly well. Read books 4 and 5 but felt that things were getting to be too much of a hard grind. Still have quite a backlog sitting on my coffe table, so haven't been contemplating a return to the series. Have recommeded the first book to others on several occasions, but have never recommended the whole series. Hey, just voicing my opinion .

I've read one of the new house trilogys (Atredeis, couldn't find Harkonnen) and the first book.
Im currently working on the second.
The first part and the new house trilogy were pretty good but the second is a bit borring.

Hello all.
I have read all the Dune books except the new House ones by Herberts son and some other guy.
I absolutly loved the six original books. The Bene Gesserit. So awesome.
What incredible characters they were and the Bene Tlielax as well.
Love the Atreides bloodline, what genetic masterpieces!
This book opened alot of crazy concepts to me and after having read them
I look at the world differently. For good or bad this is what makes
interesting writing...

I've read all of the original six Dune books. I loved the first one, wasn't quite as happy with the next two, but then I thought they got better again. The first one was the best, though. One of the all-time classics of science fiction, IMO.

I have the House Atredeis and House Harkonnen books, but I haven't had time to read them yet. I haven't had time to read anything lately. Work had been taking all of my time lately.

read the first 3 20+ years ago I didn't know there were any others I'll have to check them out.

I read the first book a few years back, but was advised that the others weren't...quite so good.
I watched the film first and then decided to give the book a go: I had been told that the book was far superior to it (couldn't have been worse now, could it?). Thank Heaven there was no sign of the stupid 'heart plugs'!

Quite some while since visiting this thread. Time to resurrect it.
Davros shame yourself to defile the holy masterpiece of herbert
serious give the last ones a tr they are really good and in my opinion even the best, especially book four, absolutely awesome.
dominions give those a butt kicking who said that the others weren't quite so good. They only get deeper. Only if you expect average fighting fantasy like sf ten you will be disappointed, but else you'll enjoy them, really.
Keryvian, it may be not worth reading the new ones for they are quite superficial compared with the original series. More action oriented and tending towards repeating Herbert, gets a little bit boring. A nice read but don't expect any deep thoughts.
And Djinn Raffo once again you seem to be a fellow minded person. Maybe you can even help me. I'm just rereading Dune and encountered at the end of Children of Dune in a talk between Leto and the preacher a hint towards kralizec the Typhoon struggle. But there aren't any great wars in the fourth book. A hint towards the conflict between the nonored matres and the sisterhood?
and anyone else who knows something about that feel addressed.
I can't imagine that only seven epople on this board know Frank Herbert. Come on, don't be shy and share your thoughts.

If i remember correctly...I could be just rambling on stupidly
with a total memory loss and be totally wrong...but will try.

Kralizec, the Typhoon Struggle, was like the doom times or the
apocalypse story for the Bene Gesserit...and the struggle
between the Honoured Matres which led to Murbella and the whole
affair that occured changing the sisterhood was indeed Kralizec IMHO.
My take was that the sisterhood was so changed by what occured
that they were not really the Bene gesserit any more...they
had gone against the coda.
Kralizec was the end for them and really started all the way
back on Caladan when Jessica gave the Duke Leto a son...it just
took what around four thousand years to play out!

First book was great. The second book of the series stunk badly enough that I quit reading it and haven't bothered to read anything else by Herbert.
