It works for me, but my reading speed decreases by just under half, I reckon. Slows me down a lot...

Like insanebane said: its all about context. Figuring out the first two words of a sentence can result in knowing the rest of the sentence before you finished reading it. For instance, I am always able to finish almost all sentences of a stotterer (which isn't very nice to do I might add). And the theory doesn't aply to longer and less frequently used words.

Too true DS, and it would depend on the vocabulary range of the person reading as well. Your reply was probably deliberately phrased in more verbose terms, but the only word I stumbled over when skim reading it was "biotmsbac" - the others fell out in the frsit psas.

That's an interesting piece of research. It is quite easy to understand what person is saying, it's just that it decreases your reading time.
