Gandalf? A DWARF?!?!?

Grand-Ranger, please!

He's a wizard, come from across the Sea to stand against the Dark Lord on his dark throne. He would be most closely affiliated with the Elves, who called him Mithrandir.

Three Rings for the Elf-kings under the sky
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone
Nine for mortal Men doomed to die
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all one Ring to bind them
One Ring to gather them and in the darkness bind them
In the land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

Aren't you excited?

OOooooh! One of my favorite quote from that, except for the song the orcs sing when they have the party up in the trees and are trying to burn them out.

The songs some are the coolest parts of Tolkien's books, btw, the time when the orcs are trying to get the party out of the trees is from The Hobbit, not the Lord of the Rings.

I haven't read all this thread so maybe someone already said this: Gandalf is not human, not dwarven, not elven. Gandalf is a wizard which is a race apart from all of them, though closer to men. It is mentioned somewhere in LOTR or Hobbit, but I don't remember where.

Can anyone settle this?

Ehh... NO, he is not a dwarf! Gandalf is a wizard (istar), send to Middleearth by Valar. The wizards are considered as an own race (if you can call a group of 13 individuals a race).
I think the last chapter of Silmarilion says something about them.

Sorry for the confusion, darlin', it's just that I have several copies of this. Some broken into the separate books. But I hardly ever refer to them separately as that's not how he originally wrote the story. I have one really great copy that is the ENTIRE epic in one volume.
