We have 17 years to make the galaxy's largest bouncy ball. Launch the bouncy ball at the asteroid, deflecting it, and the ball bounces safely away into space.

Make sure we bounce it at an angle, though, so it doesn't come right back at us...

LOL, how bout Happy Fun Ball Deathcow? Ever see those Saturday Night Live clips on that? It looks like just a red bouncy ball the size of a baseball, but comes with this huge tag of cautions LOL
Do not put Happy Fun Ball in Water
Do not throw Happy Fun Ball
Do not pass Happy Fun Ball to more than three people
Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball,
etc.

Maybe we'll all reincarnate as amoebae and work our way slowly up the ladder of evolution again.

MUAHAHAHA... DESTROY!!! Sorry, couldn't resist. Anti-matter should be useful, though... or some other highly destrouctive thingy... preferably something that could be modified for use a propulsion system of some sort for my Giant Spaceship of Doom... Well, if we can't do that, with luck the nukes would be enough to divert it...

We could all just go to Arizona, that place couldn't possibly suck more than it does. Besides, all those centipede bastards will survive, especially the big, ugly, poisonous ones. (Too bad Millipedes are harmless little buggers, almost cute, actually)

all you need is a big rocket and use it to nudge the asteroid.it wouldn't take much of a push to cause it to miss the planet.

Ive done some thinking on this, and even is antimatter were a viable weapon system, the energy requirements to divert the asteroid 17 years before the impact are relatively small, well within human capabilites, whereas by the time you designed and built an antimatter storage mechanism small enough to launch, an antimatter generator fast enough to arm it in time and a missile big enough to hold the storage device, the damn thing would have hit.

Besides, here we have a prime opertunity to dump the vast majority of the worlds nuclear stockpile, why develop bigger, more destructive weapons instead?
