Aha! The murder thing is actually scientifically documented...although it appears that the ferrets have it too...A family of 4 Black-Footed Ferrets can eat as many as 700 prairie dogs a year, according to the wikipedia article, linked to through either of the above links.

That's something like half a kilogram of food a day for a creature that's about 30 cm long...

but as the article says unless ferrets are trained to be agressive (or abused) they are very playful and gentle. I was a bit surprised to see that they are the #3 pet in the US.
