Well, here there is a state sales tax, and a local sales tax, so my guess would be that it works the same way there.

In my current location (Ithaca NY) sales tax is 8.25%, in Saratoga Springs it is 7.25%. My experience in other places suggests that ~8% is normal.

Sales tax down under is 10%
Thats after I get taxed 48.5% of my wage and an extra 1.5 % on top of that for the National free medicare scheme (total 50%) And then there is all the other charges like road taxes for every veichle you have and such. And all this does not cover our local council taxes

Read it and weep you undertaxed Americans

%5 sales tax here in Massachusetts. Some stupid taxes I especially depise, like yearly excise tax on cars in some towns. I dunno property tax, but my income tax has always seemed fairly comparable the 1/2 dozen other states I have worked in. The Federal gets the most of my tax dough.

Here in TX, we have no state income tax; the sales tax is .089%, and the property taxes for my county went up for the third year out of 5 living here.

You tell em Wellard!

We have our council rates, road tax's, GST, GST on our toll roads, GST on everything. High income tax.

If there isn't a tax on it its because the government hasn't worked out a way to tax it yet.

here income tax is around 36%, imminent taxcut will bring it down around 30%.

The Sales Tax is 24% on most products but 14% on things like milk, vegetables and other foodstuff, books and magazines.

Well we never paid PSt when we had a debt. And just GST is cool for me. To bad the money never went for where it was needed. Spending a billion dollars to find who has guns was a joke. I better stop before I get mad. Yes taxes suck but we all have it in one way or another.

when people drive down the government paid road that needs repairs, past the school that could do with more teachers, listening to a war on the radio news and thinking we need to have a stronger defence force, while on the way to see there relation in a run down hospital, to take them what few good books they could find from the public libary, they often think. "Why do I pay so much tax and why can't I pay less?"

I don't mind paying taxes (really), BUT only if I can trust they're going to something worthy. Healthcare and especially education. Teachers are about the most underappreciated people I know of. Last thing I really want is a bunch of ignorant, sick people running around in the states. Hey wait a minute....
