Wow, I have completely missed this. I guess since I do not have a cell, nor do I care about this hand-held broad-band, it really does not matter, to me. However, I suppose those of you who are texting instead of driving, or conversing in the store and not to me, you have already seen "your sign" from my perspective!

I heard on the national news that a group was in pursuit of banning mobile service nationwide while operating a vehicle, why stop there?! Doh! here it is: http://edition.cnn.com/2009/TECH/01/...ion_technology

My favorite place to drive? Ft. Knox. Why? Federal law, No cell phone use while driving on the installation (sans hands-free device).

I do recall Mythbusters "testing" the driving while on the phone issue. Turns out its actually worse than DWI. I'm all for a ban on cell phone devices that are not hands-free while driving.

I may be missing something here but digital set top boxes can be bought here for $40 that's about $20 US. I bought a top of the range digital box last year for about $80 US .... so what is the problem and why are the government handing out coupons?

It's been illegal to talk on your cell while driving here in Nova Scotia, since last Spring.

Ain't that the truth.

Actually I don't mind them spending the money as long as it is worthwhile, and this is just plain trash

Are you saying the whole thing is “trash”, as in we should not make the switch at all, or just the fact that the government issued coupons for the people who need the converter box?

It is my understanding that the switch will greatly improve the communication capabilities of the emergency services. I assume there are other reasons, but just that alone is enough for me. I also have to admit the fact that the switch will not really affect my day to day life, or anyone I know, for that matter. However, I must assume that not everyone in the country can afford or is willing to pay for Comcast, Direct TV, or whatever and regular Television has, as far as I know, always been free. Given that fact, I believe it “is” the governments responsibility to pay for, or at least pay some of, the expense that will be incurred by those who need the converter box.

I do agree with the comments about the fact that we have been given a good amount of time to prepare for the switch and it should not be delayed. I also think that anyone who has been issued a coupon should be able to use it whenever they are able or want; I don’t understand the thinking behind an expiration date on it. I also am of the opinion that the government should not have “run out” of the coupons and should continue to issue them for at least another year.

I understand that their will always be some people who will attempt to abuse something like this; I am not sure how someone could, but there are always those who seem to be able to manipulate the system to make a few extra bucks. That fact should not cause the honest, but lazy or unaware or currently unable, to miss out.

Thank god. I usually support the democrats on issues, but this was an idiotic move.
