The proprietor asks that you follow a few simple guidelines: this is a real conversation zone, not a role-play zone[i]* no flaming; if you disagree with a viewpoint expressed by any patron, please do so in a civil manner * any topic is fair game, but keep posts to the standards that Ziroc has set for the entire forum, please (ie: foul language is not appropriate and things should be suitable for all audiences) -a side note from Cloudy: I see this as a place for those short conversations about a new baby or the latest soccer fiasco, not for things that are big enough to warrant their own threads, by all means give those things the space they need and post separately! * Please, no one word or smiley posts (Ziroc has declared them 'real spam' and the proprietor doesn't want the reputuation of "good spam" to suffer!) * do feel free to be serious or silly and enjoy the company of others while you are here. By all means POST if you have something to say, even to start another topic , we can handle multiple chats, we're a CAFE!!! But be courteous and don't disrupt a conversation just to disrupt it. Come on in! The bar is stocked with coffees, teas, juices and waters from around theworld. And purple napkins, of course! The lighting is low, the golden oak counters and tables glow with inviting warmth. Near the window, the lighting is brighter, as comfy, plush leather armchairs wait for those who'd like to read a book while relaxing to music or just lazily watch the world go by. Cloudy, your hostess [img]graemlins/ladyhearts.gif[/img] Believe it or not, Mr. Regin is making a café thread, I'm so proud [ 03-02-2002: Message edited by: Sir ReGiN ]

(Pours Barry a bowl of hot soup, with little hawk-shaped noodles in it) Ah, Barry, I was lying in wait for you, so to speak. I got in an argument at a party last night with a liberal (yes, we do have them in Texas) who said that all fantasy was merely denying the reality of the social situation, and that no true liberal aprreciated such escapist crap. (not his word) I, of course, immediately thought of you, so I said that I personally knew several leftists that really enjoyed fantasy, and that I didn't think that it was something that should be politicized. Well he went on and on until I walked away, but I thought you might like to respond, and I shall quote you the next time that I see him.

Oh.... poor me, I don't have the travelling abilities, and none of my friends are really politically minded- so I don't get to take part in that sort of thing Barry.
Not yet at least....

Galadria - errr, what to say? I feel strangely tense if I know I am going to be quoted... . My thoughts are that you don't have to be politically minded to see that fantasy is a sort of escapism, but that doesn't exactly mean that it is a bad thing. In general I would say that fantasy rocks. Whether or not I am a liberal (which I am not, by a long, long, way! ), a commie, an anarchist, or a conservative I would still like the option of the bit of a laugh that fantasy allows. But that might be just me... a very odd question definately...
BTW, you have liberals in Texas! Next you will be telling me you have moderates! Talthyr - this one wasn't all that big, so I wouldn't worry. 20'000 people, when the last one had 5 times that. But when the next one comes up you should join in! Much fun! Dancing along chanting "Who let the bombs out! Bush, Bush, and Blair!". I still chuckle to think of it really...

Pretty good, Barry. Curious to see how you would describe yourself. No, there are few moderates in Texas, "the country and the weather, like the inhabitants, tends to extremes," as dear Herman Wouk put it. My favorite quote about this is J.R.R. Tolkein's remark about the critics that don't like fantasy is that "they confuse, and not always by honest error, the differece between the flight of the deserter and the escape of the prisoner."

quote: This quote sums it all up! That is pretty much my view on the subject, we need to escape a bit everynow and then. But it is not like we are imagining what would have happened if we had made different choices or taken more chances, it is the fantasy of a world that doesn't exist and could never exist. It really is fun at the end of the day, so you can tell that to this guy! And I would describe myself as a communist personally. I am part of the organisation the Alliance for Workers Liberty over here in the UK. Mild Trotskyites and classical Marxists. None of this "peasant revolution" or "revolution from above" stuff for me thank you, I just don't think it is the right way to go about it. But I digress... Hello Everyone!
*snickers at the idea of liberals in TX* I know alot of people with widely varying political views who frown on fantasy as silly 'escapist garbage'. Of course I discount that particular view... Happy Saturday (or Sun for some of you!) to everyone! Cloudy

Ah, the protests..a must in every students daily life!
A few days ago I went to a demonstration against USA's 'big brother' politics, with a couple of friends. It wasn't nearly as big as the one's you go to Barry, but it was big, about 2000 people or something. I just love the atmosphere, as you say. Walking on the streets shouting things like 'One solution- REVOLUION!' (a classic ) and several inspiring swedish verses! I love it!
