Bracers of defense AC 3, Staff of Rhynn +4, Ring of protection +2... if you got these things, you should be sorted

For BG2 without ToB, you have some pretty good options (this is with the extra merchants, which were included in pre-order versions or which can be downloaded off of various sites and inserted into your override file):
Weapons (melee): Staff of the Magi, Staff of Rynn
Weapons (range): Sling of Everard, Sling of Seeking, Fire Tooth (dagger)
Armor: Robe of Vecna
Gloves: Bracers of Defense AC3, Gauntlets of Weapon Expertise
Helm: None (possibly Ioun Stones, if you're able to wear them, I've had trouble with that)
Necklace: Amulet of Power
Ring(s): Ring of Gaxx (1 or 2, hehe), Ring of Acuity, Ring of Wizardry, various others for specific situations
Girdle: Belt of Inertial Barrier, any Strength Girdle if you favor melee...
Boots: Boots of Speed in pretty much any situation, or possibly Boots of Etherealness in certain situations.
Cloak: Definitely Cloak of Non-Detection, this will make True Seeing, Detect Illusion, Dispel Invisibility non-effective, Cloak of Sewers has its uses as does the Cloak of Mirroring

That's pretty much the choice equipment, and most of it can be acquired all within the Athkatla city limits! ToB has some good stuff though, like the Staff of the Ram (when upgraded, a +6 weapon, very nice) and the Circlet of Netheril, a very nice mage item.

For all of your equipment needs, check out this website:
