"better" maybe, but maybe he wants to roleplay. if i remember correctly, dwarves have the best starting stats in open locks and find traps out of ALL the races. but not with the dex bonus that is....

Dexterity is the single most important attribute for thieves. Halflings have the best starting "natural abilities" and Elves can have a starting Dexterity of 19 (although they can only have a 17 Constitution).....never played a Halfling so I'm not sure on their Dex' ability etc.
