Built up a new PC with XP on it, and I'm migrating my stuff over. I'm now getting to enjoy all that XP has to offer those trying to run older games like W&W...

So far, I've passed virtual memory, compatibility, virtualdub, and am now working on the codec download. May the heavens bless the Tech Tips thread... I can see how someone would get frustrated

Along the way, I did notice that we had a new visitor, Grant, who asked a question on Tech Tips. Hello again, Grant

Congrats

My school just this year made XP mandatory for networked computers, so I'm running through exactly the same hoops as we speak...

I'm stuck at installing the Ace Mega Codec Pack. I'm going to have to try it again tonight... I'm still getting the missing codec message.

If anyone has suggestions for installing it (like which of the five install levels to pick), I'd appreciate it

B: I use VideoLAN to see all videos etc.
Depends what codec are you looking for
(for pack video?)
VideoLAN shows all videos no matter what codec
are used to pack it.

Usually I don't show products here, but
I didn't get messaging system work

so look link: http://www.videolan.org

So far, so good. I installed the whole Ace Mega codec pack, and that let me get in. Every time I tried to create a female ratling warrior, though, it hung; nothing happened. I went up to DirectX9.0C (XP ships with 8.1!), and got past that... partially. I also upgraded my vid card drivers to the latest versions (NVidia 61.77, I think), and now... Gareth has just finished his speech. So far, so good

Hmmm... one annoying thing. Every time I try to leave W&W, it just hangs. Anyone run into this before? It plays just fine, but when I leave, it's toast. And so is Windows; I have to power the machine down.

I'm playing unpatched at the moment (quite a bit different), so I may try the patch later.

B.
strange. Do you need codec packs for playing?
I'm using DirectX 9.0b
My friend found that 9.0c ain't so stable.
And I haven't have problems with any Nvidia driver. I'm running forceware 65.62

I'm not sure but I think your ratlins
picture file is corrupted...
I'd get messy screen sometime when I edited
those files...
Ratlin files are: Pchead47 and 51.
(directory: \portrait\)

Try to reload them:

http://koti.mbnet.fi/maijala/Pchead51.bmp

I don't know any other reason for that...

Installing the proper codecs took care of being able to create the party. There must have been some video thing in there, even though it doesn't make much sense to me. Thanks for the thoughts, though... I'll keep them in mind.

I may have to bust back down to DX 9.0B. That's what I was running on Win98, and it worked fine. More on that later...

Now, if I could just stop this needless crashing...

Dear B.
check your windows pagefile is working propeply.
I think it might be the reason that when program ends it clears it's tasks from pagefile.
If that doesn't work it might hang up.

That's first that came into my mind when
thinking about what happens when you close program.

One other thing to try for the end-game crashes...
What compatibility mode are you running in? If you are running in win98 mode, give it a shot in win95 mode, or vice versa. Microsoft made a conscious decision to stop supporting old third party applications with newer releases of XP. So it's hard to predict what kernel events might take place when coming out of an old DOS program. Might not help, but it just might. Give it a shot.
