Wanna know what really bothers me about school? I'll tell you what: The fact that you spend so much time learning so much useless junk.

This year I think I've already learnt at least 20 different equations that I'll never have a use for, a long with various other pointless things. If I'd skipped all of the useless stuff I'd have been ready for University by now, as well as probably being a lot less stressed.

Is anyone else bothered by this?

Hi lil bro, umm not really. I mean it is more of a training of your mind and logic rather tahn any direct application. That is the bonus and point of CLASSICAL education. Where classical equations and method better prepares your mind and reasoning for the future. Increases intelligence and wisdom and capacity for SELF THOUGHT!
I am a strong believer of Classical Education.

Of course training your mind is useful, but when we're learning as much useless junk as THIS it only serves the effect of getting me heavily annoyed with school. And it would be possible to train our mind and logical reasoning abilities with some stuff that would be USEFUL, I'm sure of it.

Let us have some more healthy debates and less dry knowledge ranted at us by a teacher.

I couldnt agree more with the complaint about the USELESS CRAP they teach in school. I'm only 37 but I have to wonder how many centuries this has been in practice.

Major point: Starting in the 4th grade in Burnet County Texas we began learning how to "Diagram Sentences". You make a line that goes to the Noun, the Pronoun, Verb, Adverb, Adjective. ect ect ect. Then we get to the good part. Prepositional Phrases. Learning how to diagram where the Prepositional Phrase is the most useless thing I've ever learned.

Picture this.... You walk into a grocery store and ask someone where the milk is and the guy points and says "Its in the back on the left."

WOW!!! "Dude!!!! you just used TWO prepositional Phrases in ONE SENTENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Could you do it again?? PLEASE????"

How many times in life are you going to point out the fact that someone just used a prepositional phrase?????

Why did the school system think it was so important to teach me that crap for EIGHT YEARS?????

Id have been better off in a class where they taught me carpentry or plumbing or auto mechanics.

I think they need to review whats really important. Martial arts and firearms spring to mind. How to NOT knock a chick up might be good too.

Why do teachers have a lounge they can smoke in but students get suspended or expelled if caught???? Why did so many of my teachers do drugs and then give a class on why you shouldnt get high??? So you dont end up in a low paying, disrespected job like them??

Time to review the teaching standards.

Trigonometry? geometry??? algebra?? Are these so you can figure out how much money youre being screwed out of by the government on payday?? Did I just use a prepositional phrase???

I know Ive never had a use for geometry or chemistry after high school. Or latin. The list goes on..........

I agree with everyone else in here. Why on earth would I want the natural log of something? I don't think i'll be chopping down a tree to find out how old it is. That's the only use I see for that. It's not just math, a lot of the english grammar rules are useless as well. I before E except after C? Oh Science. I also can't think of a good reason why I'll need to know what a prepositional phrase is.

Earthdog maybe students get suspended for smoking because most are underage anyway.

When I went to school there werent any laws regarding the legal age at which you could buy tobacco. Not that these laws now in place are stopping anyone from smoking, they simply make it more difficult for kids, which in turn makes it more exciting for kids knowing that they are breaking the law. Just like drinking. "Hey, we arent supposed to, so lets do it!!!"

They just cant walk in and buy smokes now. They pinch em from mom and dad. Or mom and dad or big brother or sister purchase the smokes for them. No kids have been detered from smoking because of the laws... but thats another topic ... this one is about useless things learned at school

Good point Earthdog. I'd like to talk some more about that, but we shouldn't let Neb's topic get off topic until the 2nd page at least.

I agree that sometimes the content taught doesn't have direct application to work... in my case, I write a fair number of reports which don't really require prior knowledge of rivers/acids/electromagnetism/Shakespeare/etc.

However, I also agree with Avatar that it's mainly a process to develop one's analytical skills. After we memorise the "facts", we're slowly drawn to derive new "facts" (eg in Maths, we'd have to use a theorem to derive another). This helps us to adopt more rigour as we go about solving problems in working life.

I guess you could look at it from the point that all this knowledge is meant to give us a broad idea of what the various fields have to offer, so that we have a better idea of what area we'd like to dabble further in when we start working.

Anyway, that's just how I see it

Why would anyone only want to know stuff that they use everyday?
It's great to have a broad general knowledge. I mean, if you would only learn what you needed to know, you wouldn't have to go to school at all.
The thing is, it's not what you teach, it's how you teach it!
Today the school system is getting too boring, at least in Sweden it is, teaching is not just about handing out a book. It's about making what you teach fun! Of course if you don't care much for the subject then there's not much you can do, but when no one thinks it's fun to go to school, that's when you gotta question the school system.
