Any character could have a familiar no matter what class using the multiplayer import cheat. Startup a new mage give them find familiar alignment determines familiar, LG & NG psuedo dragon, CG fairy dragon, LN ferret, N rabbit, CN cat, LE imp, NE Dust mephit, CE Quasit. Sleep cast familiar goto the multiplayer permissions screen and import in your new Main character that you previously roled. I did this and had my CG ranger running arround with a CN cat, which after much testing I feel is the most useful familiar.
