Chicago's Kirkland & Ellis, the lead law firm handling the bankruptcy of United Airlines parent UAL Corp., billed almost $2.3 million in legal fees and expenses — or about $100,000 a day — during December, according to a U.S. Bankruptcy Court filing....

The law firm said legal fees alone actually totaled more than $2.4 million, but it had voluntarily discounted its fees by $19,136 and asked the court to approve payment of 90% of the remaining amount, plus full reimbursement of more than $127,000 in expenses....

The report covers the period between Dec. 9, when UAL filed for bankruptcy, and Dec. 31. At $680 an hour, Mr. Sprayregen commanded the top rate in the case, but his $79,356 in total compensation was outdistanced by several other Kirkland attorneys working on the UAL bankruptcy.
