Fellow Ironworkers: If you have some spare HDD space, don't mind learning something new, and have just a small curiosity for what the other 'OS' looks like. Then consider yourselves invited to the party!

Felix's endorsement: This is not a flamebait, a troll search, nor a OS war post, just a mere friendly invite to observe the 'Penguin' in action!

Flash newsletter: Worldwide Mandriva Linux 2006 Install party on
Saturday 19

Following the release of Mandriva Linux 2006, Mandriva is mobilizing
its network of Linux User Groups (LUGs). Free community installation
sessions will take place around the world. Major participating
locations include the United States, Brazil, Canada, China, Moroco,
and the island of Reunion.
More than 60 cities are involved, including a dozen in China and 15 in
Brazil.

On Saturday, November 19, expert Mandriva Linux users are invited to
assist beginners to help them get started with the operating system. A
variety of goodies will be distributed to the participants.

Participants will be able to:
- Get help on installing Mandriva Linux on their laptop or desktop
free of charge
- View demonstrations of all that can be done with Mandriva Linux
- Get answers to their questions
- Meet other Mandriva Linux users

In the belief that installation is one the toughest steps to complete
in order to have beginners adopt a new operating system, Mandriva
invites anyone wishing to better know Linux to join the free
installation parties that are being organized on November 19.

These installation parties are made possible thanks to the power of
the knowledge sharing spirit well established within the open source
community. Mandriva fully respects the open source principles and is
happy to rally its community of users to spread the reference platform
in Desktop Linux.

Meh, I'm not lugging my computer all the way there. Downloading a free trial would be the best. Good find, Felix.

Is this why that movie about the Penguins came out recently? So we'd fall in love with penguins and then want them in our home and being our new OS?

You sneaky little...

Nice post Felix. I must admit that i'm a little curious about "that other" OS. Though i'm primarily a gamer, i'll follow it up.

It's worth a try, and it was fun to play with Linux for a while, but I only wanted it so that I could set up a working network with some cool features, but I found the whole proccess overly complicated, and I now have a legal copy of Server 2003 and am having much more fun with that.

After a quick Yahoo, i see that Server 2003 is for networking purposes. Not something i can afford right now. But it begs my question: If i only use the computer for gaming, internet and a little multimedia, why exactly do i want Linux?

( That's NOT intended as a baited question Felix and HT. Serious answers guys.)

Bioware made a linux port for NWN so it runs natively (and on my old PC it runs better than on windows). I played BG1 through an emulator which was OK. Think I tried to install BG2 but it didn't work with the emulator.

Gaming alone then no. Sure, there are many folks who have allowed their code to go 'native' under Linux, the rest have not. The rest must be ran using either "Cedeaga" or "Wine / Winex". Some with excellent results, then again, that's where GRUB comes into play. GRUB = Dual boot.

Server and internet are handled differently that windoze, probably why server for server the count is about 3 to 5 (60%)Linux based. Home server, and Firefox native is usually quicker, and more secure than the rest. On this rig, I can pull 550K burst, 219K full throttle, and average 160K with WinXp/2. Under Linux; Burst 1250K, 735K full throttle, and average 230K. All on a 1500K ADSL, DHCP modem, with a DHCP router (wired), times three connections.

Multimedia, can be a good experience, especailly if you have good hardware, and the correct CODECs, which have been released for distribution.

High end digital photo printers are an eye-sore, but most standard printers, and scanners adapt well. Again, GRUB can help with that as well.

Some of the new K-desktops (KDE), make it very easy to transition from a GUI window port to a native window environment.
