I know folks who are still running Windows 98 and just now thinking about upgrading. There will always be older hardware that is better off with an older Microsoft OS (or Linux).

You took the words right out of my mouth, shamrock! The average customer may like blinking lights but this OS hog will demand hardware that the average customer will want no part of. I think they will be sticking with XP for a long time. I know a graet number of people who refuse to move from Windows 2000, 98SE, and yes even Millenium.

I wonder how this will affect Dell, Gateway, etc. who will have to put such demanding hardware to meet Vista's demands? And then pass it on to the customers cost wise??? Should be interesting...

So, laptops will be able to run this in about 2012 then?

laptops could prolly run it now but it would cost a lot of money to get one that could. (something like this http://www1.us.dell.com/content/prod...aretab#tabtop)

Trouble is that with Windows' support cycle or whatever they call it whereby support is progressively withdrawn from older operating systems this will force businesses to upgrade

I always thought the purpose of an operating system was to provide me with a platform to run other applications. That platform should be as small, light and efficient as possible to leave the computer free to run other CPU and memory-intensive tasks as well as possible.

Apparently now its purpose is to give your computer a workout equivalent to running a top-notch game...I just can't see the logic!

the XPS is 32-bit, kind of defeats the point of a 64-bit OS. I was talking about your average user really, not someone that wants a top of the range one that is impractical to carry on a day-to-day basis.

If I wouldn't have needed winxp for university I would still use my 5 year old PC with below windows specs but it runs great with linux. I'm always impressed with how much ms stuff needs to run while in linux my hardware suddenly is used a lot more effectively. Running winxp is a nogo but running a similar linux inerface is very doable somehow. I can only hope universities etc. stop relying on ms so they might get some real solutions and real new options, other than 'Just buy new hardware for our new ugly theme"

I'm running a win XP with the classic look. If I wanted a pretty looking OS, I'd buy a mac.

wow, I'd better start getting used to linux, or just never update from XP.
(I have to admit though, vector graphics sounds pretty cool)
