Thanks everyone for your help. Next time I'll try to travel from a country of which I know the language. Or let's just hope the language I know works.

I wouldn't have gone to Holland without knowing that vital piece of information.

Although I think that a combination of "a beer please" and "ein Beer bitte" would have probably also worked.
