The Final Perils (Or What?)

Being the forty-fourth chapter of Stackman’s adventures

In which the valkyrie averts the greatest disaster and saves the Gael Serran and in which the hoaxsters reappear on the scene.

(Expatiating also upon the forty-fourth chapter of Bungleau’s Solo Warrior Saga)

The five adventurers assembled in Cet’s den jumped to their feet as Missy Hissy and the zenmaster came running back into the cave. They waited anxiously to see what Missy’s next move was going to be. ”I thank you for your kind offer, Mr. Cet Ude D’ua Khan… (boy, did your parents hate you since they gave you that name?)”, said Missy, ”but unfortunately I shall have to respectfully decline your offer”. Immediately after saying so she plunged the Mavin sword into the head (obviously) of the pharaoh. With loud cheers the rest of the adventures joined the battle.

Due to the fact that only the two special weapons were able to inflict damage on Cet the battle dragged for quite some time yet, but the outcome was never in doubt. Although Cet’s high-powered spells did take their toll on the seven adventurers’ hit points they meant little in the big picture. At last with a final thud the head of the pharaoh exploded sending heaps of flames into the cavern ceiling. The adventurers fell to their knees exhausted.

They all looked at each other while the zenmaster used a bit of his spirit realm mana to heal the adventurers. It took awhile before any of them said anything, overwhelmed as they were. ”We did it”, said the barbarian eventually and wiped the soot off his faced. In a touching moment they all embraced each other trying to conceal their tears. Eventually the valkyrie raised herself to her feet and looked at the others. ”Missy Hissy”, she said, ”it has been an honour and a privilege walking this dungeon with you”. ”We have faced many perils together now, and your help has been invaluable”. ”Now our adventures have almost come to their conclusion, but we still have a few things to do”. ”If you will excuse us for a moment we have an urgent thing to do!”, she said and move towards the exit of the cave. ”And come to think of it, so have you, I believe”, said the valkyrie hinting at Kerah and Anephas whom she had just seen come to the doorway”. ”Yes, see you later”, said Missy with eyes flaring at the sight of the two. With a warning glance at Missy the zenmaster left the room with the rest of the party.

The adventurers formally shook hands with Kerah and Anephas in the doorway but paid no further attention to them. Judging from their demeanour they were not particularly interested in talking to the party either. They quickly walked towards Missy. The party made their way out into the hallway where they had left Stackman. He was gone. The battle had taken exceptionally long considering the time the zenmaster and Missy had spent talking and the time they had spent embracing each other after the battle. They all feared Stackman was going to do the ”format:C” trick since they had not returned already.

”The Stack within the Stack”, said the valkyrie, and they all rushed towards that area. On their way they encountered a dazed pit fiend who had not yet discovered that his master was dead. The bard buried him in a massive hailstorm while they rest of party ran on. They all split up when they came to the stack to search for Stackman.

The valkyrie found him on the second floor landing. He sat hugging the corner of the stack as if in deep thoughts. It seemed as if he was hugging his favourite stack goodbye. He was mumbling something. Afraid it was the dreaded ”format:C” spell the valkyrie yelled at him: ”Stackman, we made it… Cet is dead”. Stackman looked up shocked by hearing her voice. ”It took so long, but you really made it?”, he asked and started performing a dance on the spot. The valkyrie was short of breath quite certain that she had just averted an almost certain disaster.

Soon all the adventurers were assembled by Stackman who was praising them highly. ”My brave and noble adventurers”, he said, ”once again you have accomplished your task, but this time it has all been documented at Ironworks”. ”So we are a hit?”, asked the assassin. ”You most certainly are”, said Stackman. ”The Great Stack is now mine, and so it shall remain”. ”My friends I have some final preparations to make, so I will have to leave you for now, but I will see you again in Brimloch Roon”. ”I charge you with one final task, though: In the darkest recesses of this pyramid still lurk a few of Cet’s minions desecrating the Stack with their presence”. ”Get rid of them and return to Brimloch Roon; the spell is broken now and you can leave the building at will… Oh, and by the way: Do bring that Missy Hissy with you – I also want to thank her”.

In two steps the party’s tutelary patron leaped from the Great Stack landing on the floor somwhere in the darkness below, invulnerable as he was in this game being one of the gods. The adventurers looked at each other knowing that with the threat of the dreaded ”format:C” now eliminated the last real peril of their adventures was over – furthermore they had been assured a place among the legends of the Ironworks. Yet their happiness was complete and one question still remained: What about Missy Hissy?”. They all looked at the zenmaster, but judging from his expression he was also worried.

Good job getting to Stackman before he pulled the trigger! I know Missy appreciated it

What about Missy Hissy indeed?

I suspect that in the next day or so, the answer will be had. Stay tuned....
