After taking a video back to blockbuster last night, I started thinking about copying videos before giving them back. However thanks to the usual shitty quality and rather large asking fee for video copiers i decided against it. The thought occoured to me this morning however, that with a tv card in my pc i could copy them with out problem. I know that a film won't fit onto one cd and am wondering if it is possible to split a film without having to buy expensive film editing software....
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

you can split mpg files with free software. i don't remember where to get it. but i think it's called TMPEG or something like that. i found it through ask jeeves. i was searching for something to do with making VCDs, cause that program does basically everything for that. i hope this helps.

Go to divx.com. In the download section, there are tons of programs that will allow you to create "backup" copies of your legally owned DVD's to your computer.

TMPEnc is a great program for splitting up mpeg and vcd files. If you can find it, it's free, but that's if you can find. It's kinda hard to come buy now for obvious reasons. A 2 hour movie will take up just over a gig as an mpeg, which you then need to convert to .vcd file format. Split it with TMPEnc, and burn it to cd with Nero and 2cd's. The image quality isn't up to full dvd standards, but if you wish to create backups of your vhs onto cd this is the free way to do it. Of course the copyright laws my prevent you from doing that as well.

The quality of most of the new movies on the net is God awful. It's just some jackass with a video camera sitting in a theatre.

Nope, it's ok. I'll pay my $8.00 and go see a movie in a comfortable chair on a big screen with THX sound.
