Coming from a country that has no tip custom... I'm kind of confused.

1. Don't the waitresses get paid sallary?
2. Shouldn't their pay expense be worked into the price of the meal?
3. What kind of message is the owner sending to the other customers... could he demand that the wash up the dishes after they eat or he'll call the cops...

no jorath, a waitress makes minimum to below minimum wage, and it is made up with the "tips" she recives, when I was a waitress the most I made in earned wages was $2.13 an hour, and I was supposed to make that up by reciving tips from customers who very seldom paid more than $0.10 on the dollar. and somtimes even less than that

it is, because where I worked we also had to wash the dishes too and if someone is not happy with the food, it is taken out on the poor girl serving them I can understand being upsaet about bad service, but let me explain it this way. how much motivation can someone have who is not getting paid as much as the cook, and does twice the amount of work they do? or gets spat on because the food sucked? or drops a dish and it is docked from their pay? or even yet, they have to stand on their feet the whole shift with no assigned break because there is not enough people to cover the floor?
yes, I know how much work a cook does, I worked as a cook for the same company for 4 years and because I could wait tables, they would alternate on what I did each day making it less money to pay for food, and stuff, also we had to pay for half our food out of our checks weather we ate or not!

0.10 per dollar is not so bad Stormy. It's 10%.

I usually give between 15-30%, depending on the service.

there was a keyword in there some where I know it it was IF the felt like paying, and the food was good enough, and they were not drunk, and all of those good factors, plus when you add up that most people only came in for coffee, that is only 10 cents that you get

no, true, but if the customers are not going to leave a tip, the company should at least raise the pay, that was all I was trying to say, lol
when you only make $2.13 an hour, you need the customers to make up what you are losing, or at least get a raise once in awhile....I did not get a raise until I became a cook, and then my pay shot up from $2.13 to $5.75, then I got another raise in 2 weeks that put me up to $8.00 an hour. and that is what I was trying to say, how much motivation does a waitress have when she can not get a raise, and a cook gets them up 2 times a month?

Losers. The restaurant owners that is. Naive idiot fools.

I hate it when the wages take into account the tips that the employee should receive. It's like in Hungary, doctors get paid jack and there is a culture of patients giving "gratitude money" to doctors who treated them. My aunt is a head doctor at a hospital and she says: "How can I take money from a patient when I know they've got cancer or I know that they earn less than I do?" and I say, exactly. It's just stupid that the culture and economy has developed like that.
