I beleive awhile back i posted this in the BG2 forum, but my question didnt really get answered. My problem and question is this:

I have BG2, and have downloaded the patch. However, when i try to install the patch, it says: The contents of this file could not be unpacked. The executable you are attempting to run has been corrupted. Please obtain another copy of the file, verify its integrity, and try again.

Ive downloaded the patch 3 different times now, same message every time. So what is my CPU missing that prevents me from unpacking my patch? And what can i do to fix it?

Id suspect either that the site has a corrupt copy (rare, but possible), or your downloading a patch for a different OS.

Try using a different link to get the patch.

Odd, very Odd. Its highly unlikly its your CPU, but just for the hell of it, post your specs.

And while your doing that ill go see if i can think of any other probems. Its a straight EXE extractor IIRC?

I too think it's unlikely to be your CPU. Could be a bad sector on your HDD - try running Scandisk (overnight if you have a large disk, my 10 Gb disk took 2 hours - and put a check in the auto-repair box, and disable any power-down or standby functions on your PC)

Your specifications would normaly be on a sheet that came with your computer. Dont need most of them, this dosent sound like a hardware problem.

And EXE extractor - usualy called a self-extractor - is simply a program that contains compressed data and it own decompression routine. I hate em, WInZip is good enough for me.

Bad sector on the HDD dosent sound to likley given the amount of swap-files windows has, but do the scan anyway.

OH, and a severe virus could be corrupting the EXE before it can be run, but a virus that severe would probably me showing up in other places. A scan may be in order - and get up-to-date definitions for it as well.

True, but running scandisk today sorted out a few of my problems! Always worth doing occassionally.
