I have. I ran into problems after I installed DX9.0C, and I've put it on the back burner for a bit. I'm going to try a fresh install soon, to try to clean up whatever's going on.

I believe I've disabled most of the SP2 security attempts. I trust myself better than MicroSquish...

Jack hates Service Pack 2!! It ended up causing some major problems on his main machine and was generally a headache.

Any chance that we may see an addition to the Tech Tips thread involving SP2??

I think the best tech tip you can say about service pack 2 is if you have the option, don't install it! It purports to address windows security issues, but it doesn't actually do it through any technical means; it does it by setting defaults that prevent you, the user, from making decisions that might let down your guard.

And this has all sorts of consequences: like giving your computer a rather paranoid opinion of what a malicious program is, and thus preventing you from running many unsigned 3rd party products that make calls on unknown dll’s, macros or other sub-programs. This has particular consequences for older software (like W&W) that was made before the advent of driver signing and other such Microsoft-hegemonic-market-devices-disguised-as-tech-advances.

If you already have it installed, and don't want to completely uninstall it, the second best tech tip for SP2 is "turn off all its features that you can part with - i.e., next to all of them!" This means going to the "security center" in control panel and judiciously turning off everything that stops you from acting in a free yet informed way.

Granted, if you are new to computers, the internet and security issues (and let's face it, that's Microsoft's main market), then you may wish to learn more about these things before deactivating security stuff.

Ace Mega Codec pack - downloading but its gunna take 2 hours :/

I have actually tried both 95 and 98 modes and they have been acting the same.

I'll try turning off my anti-virous when I get my codec pack downloaded.

I don't have Service Pack 2 yet......and based on what I have heard I won't get it at all

I'm gunna keep trying with this so thanks for all your help. This game was awsome when I used to play it and now I can't wait. But, I guess I have to wait another 2 hours to try

Hope you will be well rewarded for your two hour download!! I'd really like to see your next post say that you're happily playing!

If I can nail down the real issues for SP2, Wyv, I'll add 'em to the Tech Tips thread (or maybe you will ). Unfortunately, I haven't been able to put it to rights yet. I'll get there, sooner or later... I think...

In any case, good luck in getting going, fiffa46!

ok I downloaded the Ace Mega Codec pack which took forever so I let it download while I was sleeping. I get up this morning and BAM its downloaded. I double click on it and "the set up files are corrupt" comes up. :'(

That stinketh...

You can either find a friend with a high-speed connection where you can download it and burn it, or consider buying the codec directly from Indeo. While it's a little money, it'd be a lot less hassle than trying again to see if you got it correctly.

Alternatively, I can send you the zip or executable that I downloaded. Perhaps it will work better through email... although you'd still have the download time issue. Drop me a PM with a good email address if you'd like to do that.

Sometimes, this gaming stuff is tricky...

If the file is that huge, Bungleau, and fiffa46 does want to try you sending it - you might use a program called WINSplit to divide the huge file into smaller chunks. Does mean that you'd be doing multiple emails to send the different parts (and the prog to put them all together again) but it works. I used to have to do that for save game files that folks wanted me to hack. It works.
