Thanks to Sir Tainly and Wolfgir for your PC advice - The end of the Saga!

Many thanks to all who helped out and offered moral support, especially Sir Tainly and Wolfgir for all your advice concerning my mobo/soundcard issues.

I ended up getting a Creative Labs Soundblaster 5.1 Live! soundcard as you both suggested, which worked a treat.
Unfortunately I had a couple of other issues which resulted in me getting a 400w PSU and melting my Floppy Disk Drive because I got the power connector on the wrong way round!

Just a couple of small issues left to resolve, but my PC now works pretty much as it should. I have a problem with large data transfers from my DVD-ROM which, having done a bit of reading I think I now know how to fix, but otherwise no problems!
So far it seems very stable and very fast - a bit of tinkering did the trick. Took a few weeks (my dad is the best - he has spent the last 3 Saturdays round at my place helping me

) but now having fun again
