Minsc and Korgan have a shield on their 'tool bar'...when I activate is, what exactly happens? I can't believe I have practically gone through the whole game wondering this...now I am in underdark with those pesky beholders and gauths and I bet use of a shield would come in handy...or not.

Its a defense button I believe. It probably lowers your AC, but while doing so you won't attack. For Beholders a Cloak of Mirrors or Reflection is good.

Sorry Pennance but you are wrong. RTFM.
The shield button means you can assign a party member to protect someone. That means when an enemy attacks the protected person the protector will attack the attacker.

yep Thorin is right. Its good for keeping your mages alive so they can cast spells and fight the battle at a distance.

Blimey!
I've been playing since the game came out here at the end of September, and NEVER realised you could do that!

I think there is an A.I script for this too, but I can't remember.

Oh yeah - I never knew too, and it's been almost since the first day BG2 came out

Or perhaps it's laziness, I'm always not bothered with small things since I'm a wild caster with my Time Stops and Fingers Of Death

lol
