I am heading out Thursday afternoon for a 9 day vacation. Now I'll probably show my true computer ignorance but I was wondering if it is safe to unplug my computer during this time that I am away. Being that we are heading into July severe electrical storms can happen at any time. Last year I was most fortunate to have only lost a modem due to a very close lightning strike. And my surge protector is nothing to brag about. Thoughts?

Unplug it, forget about it, & go have fun. There's a small battery, like a watch battery, inside that keeps power to the chip that stores your configuration information. It's good for several years. You'll know it's time to change the battery when your system keeps resetting the date/time.

Ditto. If you're concerned about it, unplug it. You've got nothing to lose.

And think about getting a whole-house surge supressor. Protects everything in the house (computer, fridge, TV, stereo, DVD/Video player, etc.). You'd be amazed at how little your surge supressor may actually protect you from...

Unplug it, I think it is the best chance to take.
It's better then have your computer blow up.
So, yes take a pre-caution and uplug it.
