I was thinking...

A. Do greyed out skills improve with use?
B. If a Ranger had points into the crit skill, would that increase his/her ranged crits, or would that have no effect.
c. would 28 in the crit skill be enough of a boon to warrent heavy multi classing and the inability to cast spells until a very late date.

So here is the idea.

you muitli-class a ranger like this..

level 1 ninja
level 1 samuri
level 1 monk
level 1 ranger
level 2 ranger
level 3 ranger
etc.

why? you may ask... for a few things

if you use this sceme, at lv 4 overall your ranger will have skill lv 28 in crit, lv 20 in stealth (if you put 5 and 3 in) and enough in ranged and throwing/bow to be effective (so long as you use those skills and pump points into them)

the Ranger's crit chance is on all ranged weapons, not just bows, so a sling wielding ranger would work.

race needed... human, only race capable of meeting all of the requirements and will make it to ranger lv 1 before any other class (as they start with ninja the hardest to lv[most exp needed])

if your willing to sacrifice 2 points into crit, you can wait to lv up the char until they can hit lv 5 and start with a human ranger.

The effectiveness may increase greatly... it also may be something to do with a gadgiteer, to gie them an extracrit chance that their weapon already provides. so long as you can hold off on using some gadgits until later

any thoughts?

greyed out skills do not improve, because they are not available to use.

have you played a straight ranger?
i play them right out of the box and find them extremely powerful from the get go, and totally rocking by lvl 12. at lvl 15, i just sit back and watch the chunks fly with all her instakills.
not to mention scouting ability, which btw, is essential in the monastery, when your party is absolutely starved for items.
oh yeah, and the improved camping. it's great being able to regen a whole group in 2 hours rather than 8. not that time is an issue, it's just that the longer you camp, the higher your chance of being disturbed by a roving pack of ranger-eaters.
my exp is that the ranger is designed to gain crits hot and heavy. her entire being is focussed around doing instakills asap and her stat design is arranged perfectly for that. (unlike many other classes where you have to alt point spreads each level up.) only 3 stats per level up to allocate your points each and every time. thru point placement and usage, those abilities scream as she levels.

just my thots.

A. That's a tough one. You can't put skill points into them. But I don't know if you won't gain levels because of use.

B. If that turns your crank, go for it. I have a Faerie Lord. She started with -15 points. But she rocks. Woohoo!

No, you can't increase non core skills, either at level up OR through practise. Ranger is cool from the get-go - prefer a mook so you can use the giantsword later. That is the time to stick them up in the 2nd rank, cos they can still swipe from there.

so you cant increase them, but you have to bee able to use them, otherwise having a bard and changing to something else after 18 would be worthless.

anyway, im going to make a party and multi-class my char like that, ill tel you how it goes...

re: greyed out skills

As stated, they are used, but do not improve with use.

re: multi-classing to get the 'boost'
I'm not sure if you get 7 points each time you change classes. Have you tried it? I suspect the game makes sure you have at least seven points.

If it does give you 7+, I think the concept is useful generally. Start a Valk as a Lord to get an extra boost.

I've seen a number of posts about L1 multiclassing to give characters a head start.

I think starting all hybrids as specialist spellcasters is my favorite; the samurai beginning life as a mage gets 2 extra spell picks and a decent start to magic abilities, making Nuclear Blast obtainable while still useful.

the ranger didnt get the bonous from the next classes. but i got around that...

I just didnt lv the ranger until i was in Arnika. When i got to arnika my char's were lv 4 (and could go to 5/6) except the ranger(ninja at the moment).

anyway, I changed when i got to arnika to a ranger at lv 1 with a total of 20 in crit(25, but it was reduced because of the ninja's 25% bonous)

well, im now lv 6 or 7 i dont remember which and amputting points into dex/spd/sen at the same time 2/2/2 because i dont care if they dont max out for a long time. my ranged combat is about 50 and i use either slings or throwing items(dual wield'd). I havent seen a crit yet, but ill let ya know what happens when i get to about lv 15/16 (it will be a while)
