I was bored one night, so I created a party of all elven, half elven, and human rangers with ** in Bows.

U used Dalekeeper to give them all 100%fire resistance, gave them each a normal longbow, and gave them al the girdle of Labelas and 120 Arrows of detonation each.

Let me put it bluntly and say that, with haste from the girdle of LLabelas, and arrows of detonation fired from 6 people... The squirrel in Easthaven still didn't die... Though Hrothgar went down in one volley. And Everard took about 3 volleys.

I reloaded, and set some limitations. Such as, no magic, or druid spells. No armour. and no close combat weapons. I figured that about evened it out.

I am amazed at twhat this party can do... I'm in the vale of shadows in HoF mode... Its hell.

Wow. I still think an Elven Fighter with Bows maxed out and a 19 Dexterity is about the simplest, most powerful character you can create in this game.

Aren't ranged weapons great?

It doesn't even have to be bows and dalekeeped ammo. Any party using 6 high-Dex warriors with ranged weapons is going to have good success. It's one of the main reasons why I favour having at least 4 warriors (in some form or other) in a party.

That party will, however, experience significant problems from about DE on due to lack of spellpower and versatility - but until then it rules.

The one thing I miss with all my multiclassing is the roleplay and archery of a pure elven ranger. Shame the in-game advantages of the class aren't enough to put it on par with a fighter or a paladin.

I thought you couldnt max out bows, you can only get 3 prof points right?

You are right: 3 PP is max for bow. I think what krunchyfrogg meant was that the characters each had 3 PP in Bow, thus "maxed" for that weapon.

I'm curious-what is the in-game implementation for the bow bonus for elves and half elves? Do they get a lower THACO? Higher damage? Or what?
You got it man, thanks for explaining better than I had. Another advantage of the party I detailed is that the warriors can all specialize in other melee weapons as well, in case anything makes it through a hail of arrows.

It makes no difference for Half-Elves, but Elves get a +1 dexterity (max 19) and a +1 THAC0 with Bows. That's a +2 total to hit. These snipers hardly ever miss.

To clarify a little more...

18 Dex gives a +2 to hit with ranged weapons. 19 Dex (only available non-magically to pure elves and halflings) gives +3. Elves also have a racial +1 to hit with bows and long swords. As composite bows also give a +1 to hit, a beginner elf using a composite longbow with maxed Dex has a Thaco of 15.
