or maybe differences if you edit your game . . .

i started a new solo female ranger last night - decided to award myelf 92 proficiency points and assigned and distributed them (via sword coast keeper)in true ranger->cleric power gaming style - up to the friendly arm inn (well, ROW) and back down to Nashkel but there was much strangeness . . . .

in Nashkel I didn't get mistaken for a certain bounty hunter - presumably because i'm a girl

more strangely - one of the bodies on the first map in the stone circle area dropped a wand of fire as loot!

even more strangely i got a gibberlings and bandits waylay going back up to Beregost and the bandits re-spawned - i've never seen that before and i ended up killing 16 of them - i'm only level 2

has anybody else seen these?

I always play a girl and I have never been mistaken for a bounty hunter that I can remember. And about the other stuff, I have never had any of those things happen... maybe it just was a weird coincidence.

I have played as a girl and been mistaken for the bounty hunter.

There is no differences between playing male and female. All those treasures and random encounter were random.

What Luvian said. The only thing that may lead to changes in the regular BG world (powers of the young'uns of you-know-who not included) and conversations in particular is your level of charisma. And that shouldn't lead to any of the changes you describe.
Loot is reasonably random (I believe that even Imoen's starting inventory is partially random; sometimes you get that wand of magic missiles, and sometimes you don't. That might be something else again though), I've no idea how not to be mistaken for anyone when talking to that particular fellow and yes, creatures do occasionally respawn.
So part of it is 'normal', and part of it is a little odd, but gender makes absolutely no difference (except of course that they either call you lord or lady etc. in conversations).

I'm not sure about the exact conditions which decide Imoen's starting inventory, but it is definitely to do with class. If you play a fighter, I think she starts at level 1, whereas if you play with a mage or thief combo, she starts at level 2. At least that's how I remember it. The potion of speed she can start with is worked out the same way.

Also, I believe the wand of missiles is worked out that way...also, there seemed to be some characteristics of Xzar and Montaron. Past that, really I couldn't say.

There are some minor changes in dialogue. As well some of the NPC's change sex (Werewolf Island). Other NPC's react a little differently to a female character. The changes are usually very small though and you may not even notice if you are not paying attention but noting to have an effect on major quests or game play.

I noticed a quest in Baldur's Gate yesterday that you might not be able to do with an all female party - the two mages living side by side one; the female mage wouldn't talk to any of my female members, only a male one to get the quest. Anyone tried that with only women in the group?

Shar-teel as well, she will only join you after fighting your best male fighter. All female party, no shar-teel.
