Originally Found At The Chicago Sun-Times, 'Return of the King' super-DVD due Dec. 14

September 28, 2004

LOS ANGELES -- If you want to find out how Gandalf and the Hobbits thwarted the evil wizard Saruman in ''The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,'' wait no longer than Dec. 14.

That's when the extended edition DVD of the Oscar-winning movie hits stores, complete with 50 minutes of additional footage for the film -- which is already 3 hours and 40 minutes long.

In addition to seeing that big battle -- which eliminated Saruman, played by Christopher Lee, from the theatrical version of ''Return of the King'' -- the movie includes romantic subplots and other scenes that director Peter Jackson wanted to include, but couldn't, in his lengthy epic.

''We're basically putting scenes back in which we know on some level are destroying the momentum of the story, making it slow right down, which is why we took them out in the first place,'' Jackson said last December, when the movie debuted in theaters. ''But DVD seems to be a medium that allows you to do a certain amount of that.'' AP

Cool! 50 extra minutes?! Wow! I was wondering how much they were going to add to the extended version since the movie was of epic length already. Thanks for the heads-up RB!

Damn - I looked at the official website 2 days ago and I could have sworn that it said Dec 4th. Just checked it again now and it definitely says 14th - now I have to adjust ny internal alarm clock another 10 days . For the model collectors (ie the collectors edition) you get a little polystone copy of Minas Tirith.

It won't be so bad Davros. Just start watching the director's cuts and all the DVD extras from LotR and TT on the 4th and you won't be finished until the 14th..lol.

Ah finally... the theater version is just like a long trailer for this one to me... it's incomplete.
