Here's one of their websites:

http://www.webhostxl.com/

Apparently they're based in Redlands, CA.

A mate of mine from NZ has been using them as a host and recently paid for additional bandwidth but doesn't look like any action's been taken. He's been trying to contact them for a month now to no avail - they're not returning his calls, not replying to emails, etc.

Two questions: a) has anyone heard of these buggers; and b) does anyone know if they've gone belly-up?

I'd recommend that your friend contact the Better Business Bureau (BBB) in California, they may be able to tell him if they've gone belly up or if there are other complaints filed against this company, and he can file a complaint with them if he wants.

Hmm, that doesn't sound too good, Mario. Could just be that their servers are down, but if your friend's site is still up that's not likely. I'd have to advise you to take harley's suggestion.

Don't know if it will help, but it's worth a try! If he paid by credit card, have your friend report the bad service to his bank too.

I just did some quick research and found this review at http://www.webhostingratings.com :

"The service is a pretty good bargain, providing a good amount of space, bandwidth, and services for a low price. Service is very unreliable, with frequent outages lasting a day or longer. Support is virtually non-existent. They advertise toll-free telephone support .. but the number leads to voice mail and messages are never answered. They also provide "support" via email and a web helpdesk, but never provide respond to inquiries about system outages."

Doesn't sound good.

Wow, FB, that does sound pretty bad for service! I use a host that has pretty good references from it's clients and have to admit, even though we had some serious downtime recently, they responded within a few hours of each email I sent to them and did fix the problem to my satisfaction.

Companies of any sort that don't respond to customer inquiries or complaints are dodgy at best, IMO.

Well, if your friend decides to use a different provider I used www.host45.com

Their customer service was exceptional (the only reason I'm not with them anymore is financial). First, when you sign up, they call you to confirm that it was really you using your credit card to sign up and not someone else. Then, any time you have a question, not only do they email, but they follow up with a phone call to make sure you understood their answer and to help you if you didn't. The fact that they provide such great customer service while keeping there prices low is why I recommend them to everyone.

Hope your friend either gets service or his money back!!

That's exactly what's happening...can't get in touch with these buggers.

I would be careful with reviews from users. I noticed that quite a few people reviewing the company hosting my place complained of massive downtime and bad customer support. This is *totally* the opposite of my experiences with them (i am even on the same machine as the user that complained of 'massive downtime'). In the whole of the last last 15 months, barring a server switch which took a week (which, i hasten to add, we voluntarily signed up for), we have been down for a total of about 6 hours from what I can see.

Just a slight warning - on user submitted review sites, you will *tend* to see reviews written by the people who have had bad experiences, as people far prefer to post and bitch then they do post and praise

Admittedly, though, it is a bit worrying to see that WebhostXL doesn't have *any* reviews that are not scathingly bad.

My experience is opposite yours Bardan. We got glowing reviews from individuals who use our host and they were both public and private (email) recommendations for it, saying they had 99% up time. Not a bad review in the bunch. I've had The Oasis Forums up for about 3 mos and suddenly they moved our domain to another server without notice and we had a week of downtime all at once.

Now, they did apologize and DID fix it when I contacted them, as well as replying quickly to my messages, so I'm going to wait to see how it goes over the next few months before looking at other hosts. But I wanted to show that not all comments are necessarily the 'complaints'! I heard great stuff, not one real complaint or issue was raised when we discussed the host with clients! But our experience so far isn't stellar.

Moot point now - my mate's decided to turf them. If they can't be bothered replying to the people who pay them for the service, then they can go get stuffed. What a lack of customer focus!!!
