I need some hardware/software advice. I received a 740kb EXCEL report via attachment. I saved it to my Documents folder but when I went to open it up a Windows warning came up "Not Enough Memory." (I get the same thing when I try to open directly from the email) So I went ahead and end tasked everything other than Systray and of course Explorer and still I get the same warning. I have 512 megs of RAM. Now my system is still Windows 98SE and my EXCEL proram is from Windows Office 97. Could there be conflict between my older version and a newer one? Yet I have opened Word and Excel attachments from newer versions without issues. Your help will be most appreciated. This is a very important document. Thanks.

Hmm... you got me there. I can only think of the windows swap file. Do you have free room on your harddrive?

Is it plugged in? Is it turned on? Is the hold screen on? Is the monitor plugged into the computer?

Seriously, though, have you tried rebooting? And then deleting everything from your Systray?

Run a virus scanner, then run the ususal spyware scanners (adaware, spybot SD).

Ran a virus scan after I ran adaware. Virus scan was clean and the adaware showed the usual suspects but nothing major. So I went ahead after the scans and tried to open it. Still get "Not enough memory." Yet, I can open other Excel files.

Maybe it's a problem with the file itself. Can you ask whomever sent it to you to resend it?

Just to clear up your doubt (if you have any):

Excel/Word 97 runs well on Win95 (OSR 2), Win98SE and WinXP pro. Other than that, I have not tried.

LOL! One for Illumina...

On a second note, with Excel around the Office 97 timeframe I experienced a lot of memory leaks in Excel, where it would just soak up more and more memory. Try rebooting your computer and opening the attachment first thing and see what happens.

And WRT your virtual memory, check and report the settings. It may be too small... on my machine (also Win98 with 512MB memory), I've got it set to 1536 MB.
