backstabs

The most effective weapons to backstab with are Short Swords and Daggers, I think they have a better chance of sucess, but dont quote me on it !

Whenever I try to backstab with Val's Katanas I get the "VALGYAR:WEAPON UNSUITABLE FOR BACKSTAB" message. I still get the surprise attack and all, but no multiplier. This annoys me because backstabbing is one of perks of being a stalker. Is it that only thieves can backstab with Katanas? If so, why the HELL is Val specialized in katana???????

It wouldn't let me backstab with hammers (Lord Raptor had to switch Celestial Fury and Crom Faeyr around for backstabs

I have found out that you can backstab with most onehanded bladed weapons.

Yes. Although I usually lined up behind the intended victim, hit pause (just to make sure I didn't jump out of the shadows too early), force attacked the intended victim, and then unpaused. This system works fine unless your target is running and you need to run to catch him/her. It actually gets pretty silly looking . . .
