Just wanted to put this update in place: earlier today, John Geoghan, a recently defrocked priest, was found guilty of abusing a minor. He was given a ten year prison sentence. Many other cases against him await. Meanwhile, in an unprecedented move, the Boston archdiocese has finally turned over the names of eighty priests that have been repeatedly accused of sexual attacks on minors over the last seventeen years.

If the mind is less apt to wander, one can then devote all time and thought and energy to a given enterprise...in this case the worship and service of a deity.

Hmmm, Kinda like the "Vestal Virgins" (sp?) of ancient Rome.

Im not trying to defend the RCC or any oother organization, but there are some facts that must be taken into account.

It is a known fact that in many cases accusations of sexual impropriety are false. I my self watched two perfectly innocent people be fired from a government contract when their two female "Security Escorts" said they were not escorting the men in classified spaces because of sexual harrasement from the men. What really happened was that these two guys were working their butts off and the two female Seamen were caught dozing in the next room and tried to use harrasement as an excuse. I also witnessed false sexual abuse accusations arise when during my divorce things didnt go my ex's way. She tried (and failed) to accuse me of sexually molesting the kids AND also of adultry...none of which had ever happened. It is far too easy to accuse someone of sexual impropriety and ruin their life just out of spite.

And DO NOT even get me started on the BS that they call "recovered" memories. Where a therapist helps you remember stuff from your childhood that you somehow just happened to forget...thaings that conveniently explain why your being a screwed up misfit isn't really your fault..lits all because you were molested and forgot about it.

Ohhh lord Sorry for the Rant....

You're welcome to check the variety of sites I linked to this thread upon your request, Magik. It's unlikely that the depth of testimony or the sheer number of complaints filed on specific priests were faked, or due to falsely implanted memories. Unless, of course, all of the people who filed the complaints, over a more than twenty year period when the Boston archdiocese did nothing and kept everything under wraps, were visiting the same psychologist. I'm inclined to doubt this.

Far more disturbing, in any case, is the fact that the Archbishop and the various members of the church hierarchy knew what was going on, and covered the problems up for more than twenty years. Priests were temporarily withdrawn from circulation for a year or two after numerous complaints were filed, then reassigned to other locations, often working once again with children. I admit to having a difficult time comprehending how some very intelligent people (and I mean this, no sarcasm intended) could make such decisions, undervaluing the security of their flock, the seriousness of the charges (which in some cases were admitted by the priests), and the recommendations of the experts brought in to evaluate the situation.
