actually if you want to roleplay minsc as more of a ranger than a generic tank you could do what i did, give him bracers of ac3 (aerie had ac4 bracers and vecna's robe anyway), until you can get some of the good low ac studded leather.
I dual wielded him, he never touched bows (too much trouble to unequip them and re-equip them), or his 2 handed weapon slots after the first dungeon, and yes your Thac0 sux until you put a third slot into it and spec w/ long swords (yes it takes a few lvls, but well worth the effort), to get his strength onus added to each attack, it was much more fun and he was more useful to me than valygar, plus since most people tend to forget he actually has a decent chance to HS, and MS. he was scouting with yoshimo, and generally stayed hidden longer, until... spellhold, but he made an excellent scout, and has the hp's to take the damage from stepping on a trap (ok so some of the later traps would fry him, but that's beside the point).

I was going to comment on Minsc elsewhere about the fact BG series should be considered a classic but now that you have insulted my favorite ranger I'm forced to stand up and demand you take it back.

Minsc may not be the sharpest pencil in the box but think of him as a true AD&D character. When you roll your stats in BG2 you get to reroll them over and over again till you like them, usually when they are high enough you take no penalties to anything. Well if you play real AD&D then you would know you don't get to lower one stat to raise another. You roll 4d6, drop smallest, and thats your stat. Don't like it.... to bad. Think of it like life. You are born with natural IQ, flexibility, strength. Some of us are naturally the kind of people that trip over our own feet. Friend of mine playing a mage rolled a perfect 18 for his strength and only a 15 for his IQ. DM was nice in our game and let him swap stats around but if I had been DM I'd have told him you are an unusally strong mage that simply should have picked a different profession. haha. Minsc's problems with IQ is not a result of being born that way, he took a few too many blows to the head as it says clearly in his Bio in BG1. It was them making him more 'fun.' What fun is a game where the characters have no history? Minsc has a most glorious history and I would gladly buy him many drinks at the bars and quite often in the game I do. This is a game that is ment to be fun and Minsc adds to that fun, if you have a problem with Minsc maybe its because you wish your character had more interesting things to say. I think your just jealous you can't have a miniture giant space hamster as loyal as Boo. If you have a problem with Minsc I seriously doubt that Mazzy makes things better. Sure pure fighter, very fun, can grand master in things. But what fun is a game where characters don't interact. Ever seen what happens when you have Aerie and Korgon in your party for a long time? Or watched Minsc have a few conversations with Mazzy? If you want fun recruit an entire party of characters that reflect your character class and playing style. Maybe thats why my paladin always marries Aerie, travels around with Minsc bestowing unto evil the 'backhand of justice', help Anomen into the Order (even though I dislike how full of himself he is), save Keldorns marriage, and usually leave one spot open for whoever I feel like questing with at the moment. Minsc is the way he is not to be hard to use but to be fun to listen to and interact with. I think all the characters were written into the story very well and to smash on Minsc is not a good thing to go. You'll find alot of us out there that will defend him, and one a side note why would you give Minsc a bow? Give him the sword +2 at begining of game that belonged to Sarevok, max out his 2 handed weapon style and he's fine for a long time to stand along side anyone who would be in the thick of battle. You want a bow user get Mazzy, Nalie, Imoen, Aerie, heck even get Jaheria. They can all use short bows or slings. Personally I think anyone that would pick on Minsc is jealous they don't have a sword as big as his or something. I can only think of 2 reasons not to have Minsc in your party. 1) You ARE a Ranger. 2) Your Evil.

It depends what you want Minsc for really. He doesn't take his rangering stuff all that seriously so he is bet used as a tank. But...

There are quite a few better tanks out there! Korgan and Mazzy are better IMO as they are fighters and can get much higher weapon specialisation and hit points.

And I find him intenesly innoying after a little while. I agree he has become far too camp for me in BG2.

Wow, Rob, you started late but you sure hit the first pitch out of the ballpark. I'm sure, since you say you have been reading these posts for a long time, you know that there are very many who dump on your favorite characters("Nalia is useless", "I always kill Jahiera," "Viconia is fun to let into the party and then murder her " "Imoen is just pathetic, I always kick her out after I rescue her," etc,. etc.)I have done my part in this, as I have a violent dislike for Anomen, but I never kill him. I will admit to hitting him with the occaisional Magic Missle(Sorry, Melusine }I have just come to understand that a lot of people who play these games and post on these boards are immature and sadistic. Nothing we can do about it, just ignore it. As you say, having an AD&D background is helpful, youi know how to roleplay more. Also, being more mature (read "older')gives you experience in caring for things (pets, children, or, in my case, both) alllows you to care for the more sympathetic characters with hard luck stories. For example, after the first time I went through the game, I always pick up Viconia and kick out Jahiera., because I feel she needs me more, and Jah can take care of herself. It just broke my heart to see her standing around in that graveyard. So, I guess, its everybody's game, and they can play it how they like, but my playing philosophy is, if I wouldn't do it in real life, I don't do it.

I kill Jaheira because our personalities clash and I just cannot stand her.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

One man's meat is another man's poison.

If I wanted to powergame, Jaheira is actually a good party member, but she grates on my nerves, so I just *cough*eliminate*cough* her while she is still in her cage at the beginning of the game.

Minsc is a different matter, I like his attitude and loyalty. Sure, there may be better tanks out there, but I like his jovialness and it always saddens me if I have to drop him out( either because it is an all-female party or because I am playing evil).

Just to add to those, who say he's (Minsc) is a bad fighter - I don't know, he sure kicks some butt in my games. I usually leave big weapons to him, 2h swords mainly since he has the STR to make some nice hits. He's the second tank in the group, because my main char (human berserker) is the main tank. At the same time, in big fights, I know that my main char can waltz in middle of enemies, while Minsc is tad behind with the group and will beat the wazoos out of the mobs which jump the group. Sure he has gained some levels and I have maxed out his 2h sword and 2h weapons style. He makes critical hits very often, he has the girdle which boosts the STR to 19 (Hill Giant one I think). I bought the Jhoril's Dagger for him (+3 2H sword, +1 cold damage, 25% (I think it was 25%) chance to Confuse the target). Lovely to see how they all scatter around there, Confused and he chops them apart

Besides, it's a darn too serious world out there and someone, who's perhaps not the sharpest tool in the box but not so grim as the rest, is good with me He doesn't have the personality issues either as Khorgan has, neither as the "wannabe adventurer" Mazzy. Minsc can take beating and he sure returns it even more. As I said, when he fights the screen shakes often from the critical hits he makes, per fight

So personally I am OK with him. No one is perfect and neither he is, but he's just what I need as a second tank and thus, will do very nicely for me.

I like to make Minsc Dual-Wield the Flail of Ages and the Sleeper +2.

PS: Easy solution if you get sick of listening to your NPCs, change the frequency it happens under your option menu. It was there for a reason.
