Non-party NPCs can do pretty much whatever they want: Cast Dimension Door, change into another form (and somehow regain full HP) when they get wounded, summon more than 5 creatures to their aid, etc.
Non-party NPCs in movie sequences can do even more, including casting to Chromatic Orbs (which is what they were, the Elves were just forced to fail their Saving Throws at +6) at the same time, at 2 different targets. From the way Irenicus acts in the movie sequences, you'd think he has some item that gives permanent Improved Alacrity. (And wouldn't THAT be nice.)

Ah, but you see fellow gamers. It is so logical. Jon Irenicus spent so much energy defeating his foes that by the time you encounter him, he is tired, tired and depleted.
Imagine if you had to fight Jon Irenicus in his prime. Heh, heh, heh... ... |

I don't know.....I know my Tank could stand up to Jon casting 2 Disintegrates simultaneously (I amend my earlier post: It actually was Disintegrate, not Chromatic Orb), as all of his Saving Throws are well into the negative range by the time we're halfway through the game. Heck, with my Undead Hunter I sent everyone else away along the Tree branches while my PC just stood there, laughing, and let poor Jonny cast whatever he wanted to. I only borrowed Nalia's Cloak of Mirroring when I found out that Irenicus never runs out of Magic Missiles. And then I started hitting him. With Carsomyr. Poor guy.

Ahh! My virgin eyes!
Man, I still haven't gotten to Jon yet, though I'm getting close, just got done killing that Shark King, then turning around and taking out the new King too and finally jumpped in that hole. Can't wait to get out of this place, I skipped a LOT of sidequests. Jon in Spellhold wasn't too bad though.
