I have some questions about the Antarctic (that’s the white area at the bottom of the globe ) I was reading that Australia claims 42% of the area which until recently I guess no one really cared about, but while in discussion about future oil reserves and the prospect of the USA drilling in Alaska I started to wonder if Australia had the rights to drill for oil in the Antarctic?

Does anybody out there in Ironworks land know about this subject? Or could anyone point me in the right direction. What info I can find, mainly the Antarctic Treaty 1957-58, seems very vague on the mineral rights to the Antarctic.

thx

Let me guess, some shady yet honest-looking guy sold you a plot of land near the southpole and you're wondering if you can get rich quick like he said

I believe there are treaties in place protecting it from that type of exploration, at least that's what I gathered from an unrelated topic on another board.

JUst cause you own the land you need to get the Mineral rights. So you need to check that first.

Wait... I thought the antarctic was all ice? Or is that the North pole?

I can't remember for the love of it.

"It prohibits all activities relating to mineral resources except scientific."

That sound like the banning of whale hunting that Japan ignores. It kills hundred each year for consumers to eat and calls it scientific

That get out clause might enable a oil drilling station to be built and the oil returned to Australia.

I can see it now:

"We're, eh, checking large quantities of minerals every day, on the hour, to see how it... er, affects... Florida? Yeah, let's go with that."
