I'll re-open one of the questions: How many outs are in an inning?

I'll ask for three answers: minimum, standard, and maximum. And with whatever numbers you put up, explain why it is so.

Let's get your numbers, and then I'll toss in mine.

And apologies to those uninterested in baseball. You might just want to ignore this entirely (if you haven't already).

Would it be 6 for innings 1-8, and 3 minimum for the ninth because if the team up first doesn't score enough runs to beat the 2nd team, then the 2nd 1/2 is automatically not played (ie. if at the mid of the 9th is 7-8, then the 2nd 1/2 of the 9th isn't played).

Innings 1/8 have 6 outs, inning 9 COULD have 3 outs.

An inning could have no outs.

If an inning starts without any outs, then the game is suspended by the umpire, then the groundskeepers fails to comply with the the instructions of the umpire regarding preparation of the field for the resumption of the play, then the game will be forfeited to the visiting team. Ending the game ends the inning.

This is just one example, there are others.

I hadn't considered the possibility of zero outs. Nice one, Seraph!

Here are my offerings:

3 outs -- 9th inning, home team is ahead and doesn't need to bat
-- 9th or later inning, home team is behind/tied and scores before the first out

4 outs -- 9th or later, home scores after first out **OR**
9th or later, dropped third strike allows visiting team to advance, but home still wins.

5 outs -- 9th or later, home scores after second out **OR**
9th or later, one or two dropped third strikes

6 outs -- one full inning

7+ outs -- full inning plus dropped third strikes allowing runner to advance to first.

The dropped third strike rule: If the catcher drops the ball on the third strike, the batter must be tagged out or the batter may advance to first. The batter was out, but advanced. Therefore, there are four outs possible for that inning.

Now, someone's probably going to nitpick about whether it counts as an out, but it's my question and my rules

Damn, Bungleau, you beat me to it. I was going to bring up the dropped third strike, and also, if there's two outs and bases loaded, it's *feasible* (not likely, yes) to have a quadruple play, which would make six outs in a half inning... although, truthfully, the inning would have maybe ended after the first out, so I wouldn't count that.

Min: 3(0? I'm not sure, but I can see it, I guess)
Average: 6
Maximum: Infinite
