That's a pretty good link HT. Funny and informative. The little bastards sure are tough.
I have a nokia 3315 mobile phone and i've always thought it was tough. Whenever i get out of the car with my hands full (smokes, lighter, wallet, keys, chicken 'n salad roll and OJ - the usual lunch break stuff) the only item which consistently manages to fall is my phone. Sometimes i even manage to drop it mid step so that it lands on my boot and cartwheels off in some random direction. I've had it for over 2 years, dropped it hard countless times, and it's still chuggin' along. Apart from scratches, the only sign of wear and tear is a seldom loss of contact between battery and terminal. But this is easy to fix with a minimum of fuss. Er... The point to all this? Gizmos of all descriptions score double points for being extra durable. For me, it's a practically a selling point! BTW HT, any experience on how iPod's competition rates in the toughness stakes?

My old iPod (20gb) has broke twice since December. I've sent it back once (on warranty) but now I can't, so I'll just *have* to get a Nano
Drop them once they'll live, twice they'll scratch, three times and it just breaks - in my experience anyway.

Ivellis- my mini has held together remarkably well considering what it's been through. dropped a couple times, squished in my locker door, with just an ugly dent on the bottom and many scratches.

It looks really good, but it doesn't load. It has a file with a ? (Or is it a !) when I turn it on, and it makes a clicking noise.
I have to wait till Christmas to get a Nano, but now I really can't wait.

I don't know,
4 gig is still very small, but that's pretty amazing for static memory. I'd only go for a harddrive mp3 player (even with the advantages static memory has such as increased battery life and data relibility), and with the features of something like the iPod photo I's much rather spend a bit extra and buy something I'm not going to drop, and maybe even keep it in a case or a thick pouch. You know what I would love? a PDA, mobile phone with hardrive, camera and audio/video playback compatability. That would just be so incredible, and it would free up a lot of pocket space too. I know they wouldn't be cheap, but I would love one. [ 09-17-2005, 10:44 AM: Message edited by: Intrepid ] |

My iriver got thrown around, dragged for 100 meters by a sprinting dog, had 123 pounds thrown onto it (me). Side effects? It switched from my mp3 to a radio station. Gadgets these days are fairly durable.

The only real reason it kept playing music after being severely abused was because of the flash memory they used, any hard disk drive player would have been severely owned from the park bench test.
