At one point in talking to the Rat Thieves I must have said something wrong 'cos they got mad at me and attacked. I ran away but when I went back later they were gone. Am I S.O.L for getting the dagger now? Or can I find them again elsewhere?

Sorry, but then again: they deserved it. Too bad you'll have to wait with playing assassin until you restart (or restore).
