Not sure if this should be in the current events thread or here, but I'd like to get other peoples opinions on making themselves targets of the RIAA:

Recording Industry Plans "Amnesty" for Music Sharers
Electronic Frontier Foundation Says Share, Get Artists Paid
Electronic Frontier Foundation Media Advisory
San Francisco - Numerous news sources, including Billboard and Associated Press, have reported since yesterday that the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) will announce an "amnesty" program for people who are sharing music files online perhaps as early as next week.

"Rather than demanding that 60 million people sharing music files turn themselves in with a so-called 'amnesty' program, the recording industry should take this opportunity to make file-sharing legal in exchange for a reasonable fee," said Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) Staff Attorney Wendy Seltzer. "Stepping into the spotlight to admit your guilt is probably not a sensible course for most people sharing music files online, especially since the RIAA doesn't control many potential sources of lawsuits."

I can't quite see how they want to offer an amnesty on something which is not yet perfectly clear if is illegal.

Do they honestly think that people will come to them and tell them that they've downloaded files and deleted them? Please...that's one fo the worst ideas I've heard.

Of course it's stupid. The RIAA is made up of fat cat recording company executives who want to protect their luxurious lifestyle and know nothing about computers or the internet.

True. but that is why they have hired hackers to find people who share. if only someone would do something about their illegal hacking!

True. but that is why they have hired hackers to find people who share. if only someone would do something about their illegal hacking!
Oh please, as if hackers would work for a company full of guys fat with money who would as soon turn them in for being a hacker.

Oh yea, that's an idea. Go and admit you've downloaded illegal software, thinking they're your friends so you can get the cuffs thrown on you, haha, right...

I wish they would just keep their dignity and give it a rest, you can't stop 4,000,000+ people from downloading files.

Get over it!

#1 how does the RIAA know that you have music on your comp??

#2 if they hack into it to find out , how do we get them prosecuted for it?

THis is realy getting out of hand. They are going to sue people for dowloading crap like briteny spears and usher. It makes me want to make my 4gig music hard drive available on an ftp for all the world to get into. I say let them sue me. I will give them the only 2 things I truly possess, the finger and well , my other finger.

They find songs and the like on your computers because they taped into Kazaa and have it bugged. It's a load of crap, they point fingers at people and saying they're the ones giving them the trouble, but here's the industry going out of their way injecting viruses into downloads, royaly screwing up your hard drive, and when they do find your IP number by scanning it, it's an invasion of your privacy.

They're breaking two big times rules by invasion of privacy and destruction of personal property. But of course you can't do anything about it, they're roll out their money with their lawyers (no offense to you TL) and they will always throw the copywriting thing in your face.

With a collosal industry against a small town or city guy, who do you honestly think will win?
