My last character was a NE Human Kensai, dualled to Mage at level 12.

Strengths: Grandmastery in Katanas, Mastery in 2-Weapon Style, Stoneskin, Haste, Contingency, dual wielding Celestial Fury and Zerth Blade. This combo makes a very fast, very efficient killer. With Stoneskin and Haste, my Kensai/Mage was almost unstoppable. He could shread most enemies before they even got an attack off.

Weaknesses: After dualing over to Mage, you get a good amount of time where your character can seriously affect the performance of your party due to the loss of Kensai abilities and the fact that you are only 1st level. (Unless you planned ahead and brought along the right NPCs...which I did...) Once the character has regained his or her Kensai abilities, all bets are off...

I am almost finished (finally) with my stalker (ranger kit). I always played rangers in PnP. He is a BGI import that is not altogether different from NytesHalo's. He has 19str and dex from books in Candlekeep and someplace else (I forgot where). Duals the equalizer and Dragonslayer and wears the black dragon armor, helm of glory and ring of Gaxx. Gave the cloak of reflection to Imoen because it was just toooo broken.

The good: Can tank in most situations. Has 140+ stealth and x4 backstab. This combined with his str makes for a 24-60hp backstab (not half bad for a ranger). He can solo most of the time, but Minsc usually goes along.

The bad: Nothing serious. I do not consider the armor restriction that bad as there are several very nice sets of leather armor in the game (Deep Night, Night’s Gift, Shadow Dragon Scale). In BG1 I usually wore leather anyway. Has trouble tanking when it is really hot and heavy because of his AC (-6). In most cases, this would be considered a great AC, but up against opponents with negative THACOs… I find stealth more efficient anyway.

The ugly: Some role-play inconsistencies. Minsc got killed in the Nashkel Mines. I did not realize that I could take him to a temple and have him raised, so I dropped him for Kivan. He has been with me all the way through BG2 though. In BG1, I killed Viconia (I still regret that) at the behest of a Flaming Fister. In BG2 I romanced her. Go figure. Maybe I should re-run him through BG1 sometime and NOT kill Vic or dump Minsc. Sort of like a movie where the sequel is a prequel.

My new character will be played through BG1, TOTSC, DSOTSC and BG2 - a Dwarf Fighter/Thief. One thing I liked with Lord Raptor was backstabbing for tonnes of damage (ala 18/%% strength & fighter THACO)

The game is short on thieves, especially with the little problem with Yoshi...
So my main character is a thief. And that way my main character gets to do all the fun stuff! But she is dual classed from mage at level two, so she can use scrolls and has her own Identify and Armor spells. If I had waited a little longer to dual class I could have had Knock too.

Ranger..
Well a ranger has some advantages.
-Good HP´s
-Favoured enemy, choose with care..
-Some useful spells
-Hide in shadows
-Can use alot of different weapons and also some staffs and such
-Two weapon fighting
-Drizzt is a ranger

Disadvantages
-Not so good AC can get down to some ´but ot as a regular fighter. You can have better AC but looses the hide ability..
-Can´t go beyond specialisation in weapons
-To branded to be played single minded
-There are two Ranger NPC´s and Drizzt in the game..

Not talking about any kit here, they brake some of the rules..
