Default New anti-piracy law...in FRANCE!!

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/05/15/f...ing/index.html

Download stuff without paying for it, and the French government will cut off your connection for up to a year without any oversight protection. If they think you're guilty, you're done.

Vivre d'amour et d'eau fraîche.

Good. Just a snippet from the article:

"The "three strikes and you're out" law will see violators getting up to two warnings before their Internet service providers could be allowed to cut service for as long as a year."

I think it's a great law and would certainly help. My concern is the technology getting better in response to this, IP scramblers, maskers, blockers etc. and the piracy crowd will get smarter and just operate more underground.

Hmmmm.... so many questions. But, for starters...

- WHAT ABOUT THE PRON !?!?!1?1!?
- How do they deem something 'illegal' if it can be downloaded from just about any other country on the globe ?
- will it only apply to french music & movies on French sites ?
- will there be a register to prevent banned users from signing up with other ISPs ?
- who pays for this this new agency ? Will the music and movie industries contribute some folding, or will the cost be carried by the silly old taxpayers ?
- will this new agency monitor *all* downloads ? If so, it'll slow the system down significantly.

Here in Oz there's talk of an internet watchdog.

If this 'works' in Gendarme-land it might give a boost to similar systems in other countries.

Anyone for World of Warcraft at dial-up speeds ????

I do think this is quite a good idea, but how will they enforce it..? They have the anti-piracy agency, but surely the worst offenders will find a way around this issue, so it would really only affect those 'casual' downloaders who do very little..

Well...the law is applicable from 2011 onwards...basically they're giving 2 years for P2P networks to come up with a workaround...like encrypting traffic.

Edit: I can't spell in the morning...

2 Years... I could see it being successful if they implemented it immediately. But 2 years? That's an eternity for techies to find a workaround.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the government will solve your problems just give us more money and more power to surveille on your lives. You may be quiet now while we scan you hard drives.

In case you missed it, it's in France, which is very much a nation where the very reactive and demonstrative PEOPLE are in control. According to Mike Moore, the government is afraid of the people in France. They have these things called revolutions when they're not listened to.

Evidently, French people care about French culture, and clearly desire to protect it.
